I have been slowly saying goodbye to all of my year 11 and 13 students in the last week or two. I have had the privilege of tutoring amazing young people and I can honestly say that I will miss all of them.
Working 1:1 means you get to know them really well and they share stories, laughs, and worries with you in between the essays and analyses.
My final student was tonight. He’s been with me since year 7 - and even then he was my height! Now he’s over 6ft tall and going off to pursue his dreams. So, I’ll leave the last words to him: I am not afraid of storms as I’m learning how to sail my ship.

Q 1 + 3 approximately 25 minutes (total 16 marks)

Q 2 + 4 approximately 35 minutes (total 24 marks)

Section B

Don’t forget to include a counter argument in your writing. You don’t have to argue both sides but you do have to acknowledge that there is another perspective. You then refute the counter argument, reinforcing your own opinion.

Top Tip

You don’t need to read both extracts before you do question 1 and question 3.

The answers to question 1 can all be found in the first paragraph of Source A. The question will give you the line numbers so there’s no need to read the whole source!

Question 3 asks you to analyse language in a given paragraph (usually about 10 lines) and you don’t need to refer to any other part of the source. This paragraph can be from Source A or Source B.

My advice is to complete questions 1 & 3 and THEN read both Sources to complete questions 2 and 4.

Please take these promises with a pinch of salt.

I was a secondary school teacher for 30 years and your child’s English teacher isn’t withholding some magical secret from them that will unlock a grade 9.

The ‘trick’ to improving your grade is good teaching, practising, and consistent effort. Yes, I have considerable insight when it comes to knowing what examiners are looking for - because I am one! And yes, I have taught the texts and the exams hundreds of times so I have the answers at my fingertips. But no, I don’t need gimmicks to promote my tutoring.
