Sometimes the most meaningful progress is not a test score or perfect vocabulary.
This week, a parent shared something that really made me smile.
She told me that her son used to struggle to say more than “yes” or “no” in English. Now, although he still has limited vocabulary, he is trying his best to express his ideas and most importantly, he is enjoying the process.
That last part matters.
When learners feel confident enough to take risks, make mistakes and share what they really think, that is when real communication begins.
This student loves football and I know nothing about it, so our lessons have become less about learning football vocabulary and more about using football as a vehicle for communication. He has taught me so much as he has become the expert in the lesson. We predict, debate, solve problems, analyse matches and defend our opinions.
The goal is not perfect English.
The goal is helping learners find their voice in English.
Moments like these remind me why I love teaching.
