Meningitis: Why Acting Quickly Matters — Especially for Children and Young People

Recently, health authorities have been responding to a meningitis outbreak in Kent, England, where several people — including young adults — have become seriously ill and, in some heartbreaking cases, lost their lives. The situation has prompted urgent measures, including antibiotics and vaccines being offered to those at risk, and strong advice to seek medical help if symptoms appear.

Because meningitis can progress so fast, especially in children and young people, it’s really important not to wait to see “all the symptoms” before seeking help. If you’re worried, trust your instincts — contact NHS 111 or go straight to A&E. Most health professionals would rather see a child who turns out to be fine than risk a serious delay in treatment.

This afternoon some of the children from Solid Rock Preschool had a wonderful and eye-opening visit to Horsham Matters.

Before they set off, their preschool teachers talked with the children about how not everyone has the same things in life, and that sadly some people don’t always have enough food. It was a thoughtful way to help the children begin to understand kindness, empathy and how we can help others in our community.

The children then set off on their adventure, taking two buses from Warnham to Horsham to reach Horsham Matters — and two buses back to preschool afterwards! The journey itself was very exciting and the children loved travelling together.

Once there, the team kindly gave the children a tour and showed them around, helping them learn how the donations support people in our local community.

The children had an amazing time and came back to preschool excited and full of beans, eager to talk about everything they had seen and heard.

A huge thank you to Horsham Matters for welcoming us and for sharing such an important message with the children.

We would also like to say a big thank you to our wonderful preschool parents who donated so generously. There were so many donations that we couldn’t take everything with us today, so we will be delivering the rest later this week.

Today we celebrate International Women’s Day and take a moment to recognise the incredible women who make our nursery such a special place every single day.

Our team of dedicated female staff are truly the heart of our setting. They are hardworking, compassionate and endlessly committed to supporting the children in our care. Through their patience, creativity and kindness, they create an environment where children feel safe, valued and inspired to learn.

They are not only amazing educators but also wonderful role models, showing our children the importance of kindness, resilience, teamwork and confidence. Their passion and enthusiasm inspire the children around them and help shape the next generation.

We are so grateful for everything they do and incredibly proud to have such a strong, inspirational team.

Today we celebrate them and all the amazing women who make a difference every day. 💜

At our village preschool, being part of the local community isn’t just something we talk about — it’s something we live.

We believe children learn best when they feel connected to the world around them, and our village community plays such an important role in that. From friendly faces we see on our walks to the small businesses that welcome us so warmly, these experiences help our children feel a true sense of belonging.

This week, the children enjoyed a visit to the village shop where they helped to choose and buy their own snack. They talked about healthy choices, practised their manners, talked about different ways to pay for their shopping and experienced real-life learning in action — all while building confidence and independence.

We also love visiting the village allotment, where the children have explored how things grow, talked about where our food comes from and enjoyed getting close to nature. These hands-on experiences bring learning to life in the most meaningful way.

Our regular walks around the village are always full of conversation, curiosity and discovery. Whether we’re spotting signs of the seasons changing or simply saying hello to neighbours, every outing helps our children feel connected, valued and proud to be part of our wonderful community.

It truly does take a village to raise a child — and we are so grateful to be part of such a special one.

A little bit about us and what we get up to at Solid Rock

At Solid Rock Preschool, we believe every achievement matters — no matter how big or small, and no matter how young our children are. From a baby taking their first wobbly steps, to a preschooler confidently putting on their own coat, we celebrate it all.

These little milestones might seem ordinary, but to us they are magical moments that deserve to be noticed, praised, and shared. We take pride in turning everyday successes into big memories, helping children feel proud of themselves and confident in their growing abilities.

Because at Solid Rock, it’s the little moments that build the biggest foundations.
