We have thoroughly enjoyed spending this final week at nursery with the children, reflecting on all the wonderful memories we have made together throughout the year.

The children have enjoyed playing games with their friends, looking through photos of their time with us and talking about their favourite activities, special moments, and what they have learned at nursery. It has been wonderful to hear them share their happy memories and celebrate how much they have grown in confidence and independence.

As part of our end-of-term celebrations, some of the children enjoyed a special Teddy Bear Picnic in our Forest School area. They had great fun going on a teddy bear hunt, exploring the outdoors, and working together to build cosy teddy bear dens using natural materials. It was a fantastic opportunity for imaginative play, teamwork, and enjoying the fresh air with their favourite cuddly friends.

The children also enjoyed a variety of baking activities during the week, developing their measuring, mixing, and decorating skills. These baking activities encouraged independence, communication, and early maths skills in a fun and engaging way.

This week, we have also enjoyed welcoming Year 10 students from Warlingham Secondary School for their work experience placement. They have been a fantastic addition to our nursery, joining in with activities and supporting the children throughout the week. One of the students even accompanied our singing sessions by playing the guitar, which the children thoroughly enjoyed and enthusiastically joined in with.

We are incredibly proud of our nursery children and all that they have achieved this year. We are looking forward to acknowledging the children's time with us at our ”Leavers Ceremony” on Friday. Thank you to all our families for your continued support throughout the year. We wish everyone a wonderful, relaxing summer break and look forward to welcoming returning children, as well our new families back in the autumn term. To those children who are moving on to school, we wish you every success in your exciting new adventure—we know you will all do amazingly well!

This week, we have enjoyed an exciting Sports Focus Week! Throughout the week, the children enthusiastically took part in a variety of sporting activities, with a mini Sports Day held on Wednesday morning. The children had great fun participating in running races, balancing activities, the egg and spoon race, sack races and football skill challenges, demonstrating fantastic teamwork, perseverance and determination. A celebratory ice cream afterwards was also enjoyed by all too!
During the week, the children shared their knowledge of sports, and we talked about people's role within the sport. They enjoyed playing various table-top football games, where they developed their turn-taking skills and hand-eye coordination. The younger children practised their listening skills through fun "Ready, Steady, Go!" games with bikes, learning to listen carefully and respond to directions language instructions to move forwards, backwards, left and right. They also focused on recognising numbers 1–5 by taking turns to throw a dice, counting the spots and finding the matching number to stand on.
Some children enjoyed making delicious fruit smoothies and explored a teddy bear-themed small world sports table.
On Monday, the children who will be joining Hamsey Green School this September visited their new classroom, accompanied by nursery staff, helping them to become familiar with their new environment ahead of September.
With the continuing warm weather, the children have also kept cool by enjoying lots of water play in the shade of our large trees in the sensory garden.

This week at Acorns Nursery we have continued our holiday theme by exploring beach holidays. The slightly cooler weather this week has been very welcome after last week's heatwave!

Our beach theme has inspired lots of exciting learning experiences. Together, we created a list of the things we might see or find on a beach holiday, and the children enjoyed sharing their own holiday memories and experiences with their friends. The water trays became seaside adventures as the children used nets to catch a variety of sea creatures. They also had great fun balancing small teddy bear figures on surfboards, developing their coordination and problem-solving skills. In the creative area, the children made shell prints in clay as well as assorted sand pictures. They also painted colourful ice creams whilst talking about favourite flavours.

Our budding bakers made or decorated delicious beach-themed teddy bear biscuits. We even had an ice cream parlour using coloured shaving foam, to make ice cream cones.

Our younger children used small hammers to hit and direct ping pong balls into numbered cups, helping to develop their hand-eye coordination whilst practising their number recognition. With the recent start of Wimbledon, the children also enjoyed lots of opportunities to play tennis, developing their gross motor skills, coordination and turn-taking while having fun together.

As part of our discussions about caring for our environment, some children used paper cup grabbers to collect litter from our 'beach', helping them to understand the importance of keeping our beaches clean and protecting wildlife.

We were also delighted to welcome Mrs Jordan and Miss Richards, who visited our setting to read stories to the children who will be starting at Hamsey Green School this September. It was a lovely opportunity for the children to become more familiar with members of the school community, helping to build excitement and confidence as they prepare for this important next step.

This week in nursery, we have continued our holiday theme with a focus on camping holidays. The children have thoroughly enjoyed a range of exciting camping-related activities outdoors.
Some of the children went on a camping expedition around the nursery grounds, using maps to help them navigate their way, while others took part in a fun scavenger hunt. We have enjoyed imaginative play, pretending to toast marshmallows around a campfire, and worked together to put up a real tent in our sensory garden which the children have enjoyed playing in. We thought about what resources we would need when camping and the children shared their own camping experiences.
The children have also taken part in preparing a variety of camping snacks, including sandwiches, hot dogs, and hot chocolate (or chocolate milkshakes) to enjoy around the campfire. Creative activities included making different campfire pictures, while our mathematical learning focused on counting camping-themed picture cards and matching quantities to the correct numbers.
Due to the exceptionally hot weather, we have made every effort to keep the children cool and comfortable. We are fortunate to have shade from the trees around our nursery grounds, where the children have enjoyed playing. Water play has been a particular favourite, and everyone has appreciated cooling treats such as ice cream and ice poles throughout the week.

This week in Nursery, we continued our theme of Holidays, exploring different types of transport that people use when going on holiday. The children enjoyed discussing their own travel experiences and learning about journeys by car, train, aeroplane, and boat.
As part of our football focus and in anticipation of the 2026 World Cup, the children came to Nursery dressed in their football kits to support England and their home countries. It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm and pride as the children shared who they were supporting and talked about their favourite teams.
The children took part in a variety of football activities, beginning with warming up their muscles and discussing how exercise affects our bodies, particularly how our hearts beat faster when we are active. They practised goal shooting, took turns being the goalkeeper, and worked together passing the ball in pairs before progressing to passing in groups of four. The children also developed their dribbling skills by weaving around cones and practised stopping the ball using their feet.
Alongside our physical activities, we explored the numbers on football shirts and made score predictions for the match. We also talked about female footballers and discussed the achievements of the Lionesses, helping the children understand that football is a sport enjoyed and played successfully by everyone.
The children also enjoyed getting creative by designing a football caricature using their own photo, which will be displayed on our football match themed wall display.
To celebrate Father's Day, the children created special cards. They were very proud of their creations and enjoyed talking about what they know and love about their dad or special person in their life.
In our daily phonic sessions, we have focused on the “sh” sound.

This week, we continued our holiday theme, focusing on different holiday destinations and the experiences we might have when travelling to them.

The children enjoyed a variety of activities linked to holiday preparation. They packed a suitcase with appropriate clothing and resources, thinking carefully about what they would need for either a sunny summer holiday or a colder destination. This encouraged lots of discussion about weather, travel, and different places around the world.

Some children enjoyed making their own pizzas and developing their independence, creativity, and fine motor skills while preparing their tasty creations. The children also made fruit filled ice cream cones for snack and our younger children made ice cream cone biscuits for their snack!

Throughout the week, we have explored shapes through matching activities and symmetry. The children have also participated in a variety of number activities including counting, number recognition, and sequencing games.

Our outdoor undercover area was transformed into a seaside. The children had great fun exploring the beach-themed environment, which included a sandpit beach, a rock pool where they could catch and investigate seaside creatures, a seaside puppet theatre for imaginative storytelling, and a café. In the café, the children enthusiastically took on different roles, serving fish and chips and a selection of delicious ice creams to their friends and staff. These holiday-themed activities have inspired imaginative play, communication, problem-solving, and collaborative learning throughout the week. We have also enjoyed seeing the children's enthusiasm as they explored these experiences.

We were delighted to welcome all of our nursery children back after the half-term break. It has been wonderful to see everyone settle back into nursery routines so quickly and enthusiastically.
This week, we introduced our new Talk for Writing story, "Sharing a Shell". The children have enjoyed recalling the story, joining in with actions, and beginning to learn about the characters and themes of friendship and sharing.
We also had some very exciting developments in our nursery. Over the holiday, our ladybirds and butterflies completed their life cycles, and the children were thrilled to help release them into the outdoors. This provided a wonderful opportunity to talk about growth, change, and caring for living things.
Some of the children have been busy baking delicious biscuits and cakes. They enjoyed measuring ingredients, mixing, and decorating them while developing their counting, fine motor, and teamwork skills. Best of all, they were very keen to eat their tasty creations!
Using PlayPod (junk resources), the children have also been exploring their experiences of the half-term holiday through imaginative play. They worked collaboratively to create different forms of transport for holiday journeys, as well as a variety of accommodation, including hotels and camping tents. This encouraged creativity, problem-solving, communication, and cooperative play.
To further develop fine motor skills and independence, the children have been using special activity bean bags featuring a range of everyday fastening skills, including shirt buttons, belt buckles, snap buckles, toggle buttons, hook-and-eye fasteners, zips, and press studs. Through these hands-on activities, the children have been strengthening their hand muscles needed for dressing themselves and practising important self-care skills that support their growing independence.

This week in Nursery, the children have had a wonderful time exploring the topic of insects. They enjoyed learning new facts about different creepy crawlies and took part in a range of creative activities inspired by nature. In arts and crafts, the children made colourful spiders, they threaded beads to make caterpillars, and they created insects using leaves.

The children took part in a variety of insect-themed activities. Some children decorated beautiful butterfly biscuits, while others enjoyed matching spotted ladybirds to numbered bug hotels, helping to develop their counting and number recognition skills in a fun and engaging way. The children also sorted insects into groups, learning to identify similarities and differences between a variety of insects and bugs.

Working together as a group, the children created a Talk for Writing story about a sparkly ladybird. They shared their ideas, used their imagination, and enjoyed bringing their story to life together.

To help prepare for the school summer fair, the children made delicious flower biscuits and old-fashioned lemonade. They were very proud of their creations and enjoyed working together to contribute to the fair.

We have also focused on letter Zz during our daily Little Wandles Phonic sessions.

Last week in nursery, the children explored the topic of celebrations, linked to our Little Wandles book - "Amazing” about a little boy and his pet dragon who enjoyed parties. They enjoyed taking part in a range of creative and hands-on activities linked to parties and special occasions. The children used their imaginations to decorate party hats and make colourful Playdough cakes, adding candles and decorations as they talked about birthdays and celebrations they have enjoyed.

In maths and construction, the children worked together to build numbered Lego towers, practising their counting and number recognition skills while developing teamwork and problem-solving.

Our younger children enjoyed colour mixing, printing, music and movement and shape sorting games.

The changing weather also brought a surprise for everyone, and the children were delighted to go outside and catch hailstones, observing the icy pellets and talking about how they felt and melted in their hands.

We also had a busy week deciding and making a sample of what the nursery planned to make and sell at the school fair next week. The children were keen to bake something to sell and had fun making a "sample" to send to "Dragons Den".
