Why do we fear failure so much?

Partly it’s because our Imposter Syndrome makes us pretend to know more than we do.

The failure brings feelings of shame.

But we lack confidence in our ability to recover from failure.

This is because we’ve only been taught to avoid it.

We’ve got a great promotion and then anxiety sets in.

What’s going on?

Although a promotion is about career progression and moving forwards, it can sometimes feel like a step backwards.

Rather than embracing the new, we can feel worried and out of our depth.

This is because a promotion that takes us to the next level in our career can put us on a steep learning curve.

Most of us associate learning with making mistakes. We fear that our incompetence will trip us up when the eyes of the world are upon us.

To avoid these feelings of shame we pretend to know more than we do.

It’s the pretence that leads to feelings of Imposter Syndrome and (ironically) potential mistakes.

Here’s a simple task to build your confidence.

Sit down with pen and paper and make a list of all the questions you need answered in order to make you feel more confident in your new role. Keep the paper in your pocket because more questions will come to you over the next few days.
Score 1 – 10 for how confident you’ll feel once you have the information.

Work out which questions you could address yourself once you’ve got your foot in the door. There will be a few.

Decide which are the key questions that would make a big difference to your confidence.

Make a list of people you can approach for answers. You’ll find that you only need to approach one or two people, rather than the multitude you imagined!
People are happy to help, even when they’re busy. Some will be pleased you asked them as they see it as taking an interest. Others will be too busy with the pressures of the day to pass judgement on you.

Most people will give you more information than you asked for. Getting the answer to a few questions knocks a lot more off your list.

Feeling incompetent?

Great news! It means you know what good looks like.

Sometimes when we get a promotion and go back to being a learner, we can feel incompetent and fear failure.

We cover it up by pretending to know more than we do and to be more confident than we actually feel.

It’s this pretence that makes us feel like an imposter.

But if we worry about no longer being an expert, it means that we previously had expertise on our previous role.

If we did it once, we can do it again.

What did you do in your last job role to gain confidence?

How can you apply that learning to your current situation?

Getting a promotion can feel like a step backwards.

We stop being an expert and go on a sharp learning curve.

This makes us feel incompetent so we fear failure.

We try to overcome these feelings by pretending to be more confident than we are.

A change in role can lead to feelings of Imposter Syndrome.

Over 70% of us experience it at some point in our career; usually when we take up a new position.

This is because a change in our job brings a change in our identity.

We’ve stopped being an expert and gone back to being a learner.

This can make us fear failure as we associate learning with incompetency.

To overcome these feelings, we sometimes pretend to know more than we do so that we appear successful.

This pretense produces feelings of being a fraud - hence the term Imposter Syndrome.

Here are 5 key tips that are tried and tested to help you feel more confident.

1. Work out “Who’s who” so you can set up a mentoring pyramid
2. Understand the company culture
3. Clarify the value that you bring to your new role
4. Decide who you want to be in your new role
5. Map out the traps and hazards of the first 90 days and how to avoid them
