Today is Restart a Heart Day – an annual event led by the Resuscitation Council UK to increase the number of people who survive an out of hospital cardiac arrest by increasing the amount of people who know how to do CPR

The latest figures for the number of people who survive an out of hospital cardiac arrest is currently around 1 in 10 – that is a figure that should, and could, be much less

By learning CPR you could help improve that figure, by increasing awareness about the use of Public Access Defibrillators we could improve it even more!

In all our classes from children to parents to grandparents right through to First Aid at Work we teach both of these skills with plenty of hands on practise so you leave us confident in your ability to provide life saving help

Anyone can have a cardiac arrest with no warning, it is an essential life skill to know CPR, as around 80% of cardiac arrests happen at home. Every minute without CPR and defibrillation decreases the persons survival chance by up to 10%

The Chain of Survival is how we give that person the best chance
1. Early Help – call 999 ☎️
2. Early CPR 💔
3. Early Defibrillator ⚡
4. Early Hospital 🚑

Today is and so I thought we would combine the two and talk about one of the common injuries we see especially when we start going out and about with our babies when they start weaning

It becomes a time we can go out to meet friends and family for a catch up and a coffee and all of a sudden it can turn into an emergency

In places with limited space highchairs are often placed in the aisle which then makes it difficult for serving staff to reach your table and can result in hot food and drinks being passed over your baby to reach the table, it only takes a second for it to fall or be grabbed from the table by your little one 🫖🔥

Hot Drink Safety ☕
30 babies and toddlers a day go to hospital with a hot drink burn
60% of all children's burns are due to hot drinks
Always keep hot drinks out of reach
Never carry a hot drink and a baby together
If a burn happens the most effective treatment is

COOL for 20 minutes under running water 💦
CALL for help ☎️
COVER with cling film 🏥

💗🩵 Together We Care: Remember, Honour, Support 🩵💗

Today marks the start of Baby Loss Awareness Week, a time to pause, remember the babies we’ve loved and lost, and support each other through the grief. Every name matters, every memory counts.

Did you know?
🩷 1 in 5 pregnancies end in miscarriage
🩵 1 in 90 pregnancies are ectopic
🩷 1 in 100 women experience recurrent miscarriage
🩵 Around 400 babies are miscarried daily in the UK

Let’s come together to:
✨ Speak the names of the babies we remember
✨ Share care and support for those affected
✨ Practice self-care, because caring for yourself helps you care for others
💗 This week, let’s remember, support, and care—together. 💗

Children under 5 account for half of all meningitis deaths

Meningitis is swelling of the lining around the brain and spinal cord, caused by germs, these germs can also cause septicaemia (sepsis) which is blood poisoning

Both of these diseases are life threatening so quick recognition and treatment is vital

Symptoms of meningitis are very easily confused with other illnesses so can be very hard to recognise but here are some of the specific symptoms:

💜Fever and/or vomiting
💜Severe headache
💜Limb / joint / muscle pain
💜Cold hands and feet
💜Stiff neck
💜Dislike of bright lights
💜Very sleepy or floppy
💜Confusion
💜Seizures
💜Bulging soft spot on infants head
💜Rash anywhere on the body that does not fade when pressed with a glass – DO NOT wait for this as it is usually one of the later signs

🚨If you suspect your child has meningitis you must go immediately to your closest Urgent and Emergency care centre and tell them you suspect meningitis 🚨

Bacterial meningitis requires fast hospital admission and treatment with antibiotics, viral meningitis will usually get better on its own with 7-10 days

: Make Allergies Matter!

This Anaphylaxis Awareness Week (1–7 October), let’s spotlight the real impact of severe allergies—up to 3 million people in the UK are affected, and 1 in 3 children with allergies report feeling bullied.

The theme this year is “A Sense of Belonging”. In every classroom, at least 2 children live with food allergies. It’s not just about avoiding nuts or dairy—it’s about feeling safe, respected, and included.

Join us in spreading awareness:

Check-in on wellbeing: A chat or a cuppa can mean the world to a parent or child managing allergies.

Learn the signs: Know the symptoms of allergies and anaphylaxis—timely action saves lives.

Promote inclusion everywhere: School, playgrounds, holidays, and dining out—support goes beyond the classroom.

Let’s make sure that for everyone living with allergies, being included isn’t optional—it’s essential.

Today we are sharing information about the new childhood vaccination schedule in the UK - not our usual post but vaccines and illness are one of the things that can sometimes upset our babies appetite and the signs of allergies are very similar to childhood illnesses or side effects of vaccines such as fever and a rash

The vaccine MMRV is Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella

Measles symptoms include high fever, rash, sore eye, cough and runny nose
Mumps symptoms include fever, headache and painful glands
Rubella symptoms include rash, swollen glands and sore throat
Varicella (chicken pox) symptoms include fever and an itchy spotty rash

Anyone who has not had 2 doses of MMR can speak to their GP to see if they are eligible, particularly if you work with small children, pregnant or vulnerable people

💙❤️

We cover Febrile Seizures in our classes and know that it can be really scary if it happens

Febrile seizures can happen when a child has a fever, usually above 38 🤒

👉What to do:
⭐️Stay with them and time the length of the seizure
⭐Gently protect their head from injury with your hands or something soft
⭐️Place them in the recovery position if able

👉Dial 999 and ask for an ambulance if:
⭐️Your child is having a seizure for the first time
⭐️Seizure lasts longer than 5 mins
⭐️You suspect seizure is caused by another illness
⭐️Your child is having breathing difficulties
