The black belt prep and build up training has begun!

At GMA we aim to get at least 3 months focused training in prior to the 1st Dan assessment. This time allows the instructor to address any gaps in the candidate’s core Karate knowledge, and provides a progressive program of Karate specific fitness and strength training.

Yesterday at the Didcot Dojo we conducted 30mins of sparring before the group set about created practical Kihon sequences. In pairs, using the club handbook as a reference guide, the students played the role of the instructor taking it in turns to deliver the instructions in Japanese to each other. Building their confidence in the terms helped the student focus on the delivery of the techniques.

Interestingly we had a brief discussion about why we still use the Japanese terms and keep some of the cultural elements associated with Karate training.

Firstly it is about providing access to wider training opportunities. Without a basic understanding of the Japanese terms training with other groups or instructors would be more difficult.

Secondly there is something to be said for the physiological aspect of the way commands in Karate are delivered. It forces a particular response and call to action that is difficult to deliver any other way. Similar to the way in which drill commands are issued by a drill instructor in the military. This way of teaching and training is limited but definitely has its place in instilling purpose and focus in students.

Great to have Stu in for his first training session as a newly promoted 1st Dan 👊 thanks for sharing your grading experience with the group too.

Its been a week since the first GMA black belt gradings of 2026.

Here are few highlights and memories from the day.

The candidates for the December 2026 Dan grading, having watched Jesse and Stu take on the challenge of first Dan, are about to embark on an accelerated training program.

Georgie and Elisha we wish you all the best with the task ahead; we know you will meet it with the determination and strength you are both know for. A little over 3 months to go! 👊

What a weekend it has been for Grove Martial Arts!

Huge congratulations to Stu and Jesse for both passing their GMA 1st Dan black belt 👊🔥💪
An epic performance from both, they gave absolutely everything they had and left nothing in reserve. We are all proud to have them join the black belt ranks of Grove Martial Arts.

This grading was particularly special as Stu has now become the first GMA Didcot black belt 🤜🤛

In addition to the Dan grading 12 of our adult students passed their Kyu gradings on Saturday to earn their new belts.

Gus and Georgia earned their 1st Kyu brown and black belts and the clock has now started ticking down to their own black belt gradings in 12 months time.

Thank you to the Instructor team and all those who came to support the grading candidates; your contributions are invaluable in making these important events run. 🙏

Today is the day for our chief instructor, time to take on the challenge of grading for his 5th dan! Seeing you show up for yourself and go into this so well prepared has been great, we are all proud of you already 😊 what an inspiration for all those who look up to you.
May the karate Gods be kind today and please don't gain any new injuries! Let's hope you're as smiley as this afterwards!

Final gym session before the grading is done 💪🔥

Thanks james.beetham.5 for being my gym bro wing man 👊 your support has been invaluable, I can’t thank you enough; thanks for showing up week in week out and suffering with me 😂.

It was a scorcher tonight, not too dissimilar to training in Afghanistan 🇦🇫 when I was working towards second Dan! That seems like another life time ago now.

So that’s it for the hard work; some teaching tomorrow and a slow run through of all the material to keep my Karate feeling fresh. A bit of supporting paperwork to write up as well then I’ll be ready for my Friday morning grading for 5th Dan.

I wanted to take this opportunity to sing the praises of The Engine House Gym - Ardington. Since JB and I joined back in November everyone has been welcoming, supportive and just nice people to be around. James and Q are great and I would highly recommend the Engine House. It has my GMA official seal of approval. If you want to try for yourself they offer a 2 week free trial period - no one has asked me to promote them I have just had the best experience here and think they deserve a mention and a thank you.

That’s it then, I’m as physically prepared as I am going to be. I have worked hard in the gym to massively increase my functional strength, built a strong cardiovascular fitness level and have lost 22.7kg (just over 50lbs) since the 9th March. If I fail now I’ll do it in the best shape I have been in for 15 years! 🤣
