Here's a cover of one of Marty Friedman's masterpieces from Megadeth's 1992 album "Countdown to Extinction", by far my favourite Megadeth album and probably the reason I picked up the guitar in the first place.

I’ve always admired Friedman's unique style and the phrasing and tones on this album were out of this world.

In theory, this isn't as technical as some of Marty's other solos but his signature bends and slurs make it so. I had to slow down the original track as much as i could to try and figure out what was going on, particularly in the last section.

Learning “how to learn” is a subject seldom studied and often never considered when looking for ways to save time and optimise performance.

To go from disaster to master in any given subject you have to learn to navigate through the four stages of learning as efficiently as possible.

Here’s an excerpt taken from a lesson on mindset, featured in the Guitar 101 course (available at www.guitarwarrior.co.uk)

Here’s a cover of “Flight of the wounded bumblebee” by Extreme.

This is a fine example of how a delay effect can be used as a tool to carry out 50% of the heavy lifting - The solo is at 200bpm and uses a dotted 8th note delay with a single repeat, resulting in 2 notes for every one that you play.

I’ve also included the proceeding main riff for “He-man woman hater” which is hands down my favourite Nuno riff. A commonality throughout Nuno’s playing is the use of left and right hand muting to create a more percussive sound, not surprising as he started out as a drummer...

Charvel DK24 - so good that I just had to have another one. Aside from the obvious aesthetics the only big differences are an Alnico ll in the neck and a mahogany body, for which I’ve always had a preference. However, the two instruments sound completely different. Loving the newer refined heel cut as well!

Here’s an old cover of one of my favourite Satriani tunes. It’s peppered with embellishments, some of which are inspired by several YouTube guitarists. That’s one of my favourite things about the internet - the prolific opportunity for inspiration.

If you’ve ever seen “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” then you may recognise this solo from the mall scene. From the song “Play with me” by Extreme. Nuno Bettencourt is one of my all-time favourites and this solo personifies his style perfectly - plenty of palm muting, hammer-ons/pull-offs and some string skipping, all played at a super high tempo.

If there ever was a secret to being able to pick seriously fast licks and runs then Economy Picking would be it. The clue is in the name, after all...

Speed is the result of accuracy and efficiency which is the backbone of the Economy Picking technique, and the Guitar 101 course features a section dedicated to mastering it.

String skipping is a great way to span a wide range of intervals without the need to shift your hand up or down the neck. Being able to retain a "base" position allows for efficiency of movement which equates to more speed.

Here is an excerpt from a string skipping lick featured in the Guitar 101 course:
