🩹 Why every school and nursery needs paediatric first aid trained staff

Children don’t respond to emergencies in the same way adults do. That’s why paediatric first aid training is so important in education and childcare settings.

Whether it’s choking, asthma attacks, allergic reactions, febrile seizures, or CPR, staff need the confidence and practical knowledge to respond immediately and appropriately.

Current EYFS guidance requires qualified paediatric first aiders to be available in early years settings, with further updates reinforcing these standards from September 2025.

But beyond compliance, proper training helps create:
✔ Safer learning environments
✔ Faster emergency responses
✔ Greater confidence among staff
✔ Reassurance for parents and carers
✔ Better overall safeguarding practices

Many people underestimate how different paediatric first aid is compared to adult first aid — particularly when dealing with infants and young children. Community discussions consistently highlight how valuable hands-on paediatric first aid training can be in real emergencies.

HMB Training Services provides accredited paediatric first aid training for schools, nurseries, and childcare providers across the Midlands.

🚨 New allergy safety guidance is coming to schools from September 2026 — known as Benedict’s Law — and it could save lives.

Named after 5-year-old Benedict Blythe, who tragically died following an allergic reaction at school, this new legislation is pushing for stronger allergy awareness and emergency response procedures across all schools in England.

Under Benedict’s Law, schools are expected to:

✔️ Train ALL staff to recognise and respond to anaphylaxis
✔️ Keep spare adrenaline auto-injectors (EpiPens) on site
✔️ Have clear whole-school allergy policies
✔️ Create individual care plans for pupils with allergies

Why does this matter?
Because allergic reactions can escalate within minutes, and fast action can mean the difference between life and death. With food allergies continuing to rise in children, schools need confidence, awareness, and proper training to keep pupils safe.

For schools, teachers, support staff, and parents — this is an important step toward creating safer learning environments for every child. ❤️

If you’d like to understand more about what Benedict’s Law means and how schools can prepare, read the full blog here:

Creams and lotions (unless individually agreed for a child’s care plan).

🔑 Extra Notes for Early Years Settings

Every kit should be easily accessible, clearly labelled, and regularly checked (ideally monthly).

Expiry dates matter! Replace anything out-of-date.

EYFS requires a Paediatric First Aider to know where the kit is and how to use every item.

For outings, settings should have a travel first aid kit (lighter, but still with essentials like plasters, dressings, gloves, wipes, and CPR face shield).

I can cover all these needs...Buy here or drop me a DM for additional items

It only takes 15 seconds

Are your blinds safe?

It can take just 15 seconds for a young child to lose consciousness if they get tangled in a blind cord. And sadly they can die in just a few minutes.

Make your blind cord safe, secure it on a cleat hook or use a tensioner (safety devices that should come with all new blinds).
