The NASUWT's Manifesto for Teachers is an ambitious programme for the next government to commit to a New Deal for Teachers, an agenda essential to securing a world-class education system that allows all children and young people to flourish and succeed.
The critical importance of the teaching workforce
We believe that the opportunity to benefit from a high-quality education is the fundamental right of every child.
We want schools and colleges to be supported and resourced to deliver educational rights and entitlements for all children and young people alongside a foundational commitment to dignity in childhood, irrespective of background.
As the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has confirmed, the quality of an education system cannot exceed the quality of its teachers and the conditions they work in.
Those education systems that are widely regarded as the highest performing or the fastest improving are characterised by an approach to policy that gives practical effect to this core principle.
For any government to develop and implement effective policy in the field of education, it must recognise that delivering entitlements for children and young people depends upon guaranteeing the entitlements of teachers to the pay and working conditions they deserve and need to do the job we ask them to do.
Governments that overlook the needs and legitimate interests of teachers will rarely, if ever, make a positive difference to children’s lives.

This is an awareness-building course which will also explore strategies for celebrating, promoting and organising around neurodiversity in the workplace. Running at Rednal on 20th April and 12th July
The course introduces participants to neurodiversity and to their role in campaigning for neuro-inclusive workplaces and promoting neurodiversity at work.
Using case studies, it examines the barriers that workplaces put in the way of workers who are autistic, dyspraxic, dyslexic or dyscalculic or have ADHD or Tourette syndrome. It will also help teachers/lecturers support neurodiverse pupils in their schools and colleges.
Through participatory learning, we apply the social model of disability to identify measures to reduce these barriers and develop skills in campaigning and negotiating for them.
This course is suitable for all members and is CPD accredited.

The Disabled Teachers' Conference will take place virtually on Saturday 17 June 2023.
With support from the NASUWT's Disabled Members' Advisory Committee, we have an informative and interactive day planned, geared solely to the needs of you, our disabled teachers. If you want to know about your legal protections as a disabled teacher or how best to be involved in the NASUWT or how to access support, book your place today!
Dr Roach told members, ‘Year-on-year pay cuts by the Government have left many disabled teachers in a desperate position and worried about their finances.’ He continued, ‘Our evidence shows that 91% of disabled teachers are worried about their financial situation, a rate that exceeds that for other teachers. This has resulted in disabled teachers being more likely to have to cut back on basic living costs and 79% seriously considering leaving their job, citing pay as an issue. ‘We need stronger regulation from the Government to guarantee rights for disabled teachers and a mandatory duty on employers to publish data on their disability pay gaps and action plans.‘
A live NASUWT poll of teachers found that 85% of attendees were worried about their financial situation, with the cost-of-living crisis and years of real-terms pay cuts adding to the disproportionate financial vulnerabilities experienced by workers with disabilities.
We want to hear about your experiences in schools and colleges across the UK and beyond. Please join us on the 17 June. We look forward to welcoming you at the event.
The Government is refusing to pay teachers fairly or take action to tackle excessive workload and working hours. We are balloting members in all state-funded schools for industrial action on pay, workload and working time. Ballot papers will be issued by post on 5 June.

We are calling time on unreasonable expectations and excessive workload for teachers
Our members have told us its Time for a Limit on excessive workload, unreasonable expectations and the increasing number of hours it takes to fulfil their role.
Despite their best efforts to keep up with an ever-increasing workload, 69% of teachers told us they feel too worn down to give their job their best effort.
Our Big Question and Wellbeing Surveys carried out in 2022 found that teachers ranked workload as the top issue that most impacted both their physical and mental health. Visit : https://www.nasuwt-walsall.org.uk/blog/post.asp?BlogID=1189
“When we asked teachers what they were willing to do to get the Government to act to address members’ concerns about cuts to teachers’ pay, 90% of members who voted said they are ready to take strike action and action short of strike.
“The NASUWT has written to Ministers in England and in Wales to confirm that we remain in dispute over teachers’ pay.
“The UK has some of the most draconian laws on workers’ rights anywhere, including the imposition of arbitrary industrial action ballot threshold requirements and prohibition on unions balloting members online.
“The NASUWT will be campaigning vigorously to ensure the repeal of all anti-trade union laws. But, no anti-trade union laws are going to stop us from doing whatever it takes to secure a better deal for our members, including by announcing plans shortly for further balloting of members.”
