Let’s face it, there are so many examples of how you can provide a language rich environment for your child. These are just a few:

1. Read a variety of books- this means diving into a wide range of text types and genres. This can range from fiction to non- fiction texts including letters, newspapers, mystery and adventure genres. Simply reading a leaflet at a local shop can become a learning opportunity!

2. Be a role model- use descriptive and exciting language when communicating with your child. This can be through reading stories out loud, being inquisitive about new language and reading around words in a text.

3. Play word games- there are so many games both oral and written that can be played at home. We particularly enjoy playing games such as ā€˜Wordle’, ā€˜Articulate’ and ā€˜Lingo’. Making learning fun and engaging is key!

4. Talk about your day and expand on interesting topics- not only could you discuss one word a day that you have all learnt but asking your child about their day and focusing on one aspect of this is valuable too. For example your child may have watched ā€˜Newsround’ at school. This would be a great opportunity to dig deeper and touch on words they may not have heard before.

One key thing to remember is that many words that children hear are shortened or mispronounced and this can sometimes lead to misconceptions; even the shortest words can teach the biggest lessons.

If you have any questions about your child’s learning, please contact Heena or Sam and we would be happy to discuss the support we can offer.

Here’s a book we added to our classroom library very early on. šŸ“š šŸ“š šŸ“š

If you haven’t already, we recommend losing yourself in the beautiful world that has created through language and art. It’s a great book that can be used to promote a positive mindset in children (and adults) and helps to create an environment, where they feel safe to express their emotions and learn just how powerful friendship and kindness can be.

Just one page can bring out so many activities and conversations in a session and we know that children really value the teachings from this.

The mental health of our students is a crucial part of our work here at Ascend tuition and we are constantly finding new ways of ensuring that they are communicating about the things are important to them.

THE LEARNING PIT

The learning pit is a place that we find ourselves as learners, from time to time. This can be an uncomfortable, difficult situation but the more that we visit the learning pit, the more we find ways of getting out. At Ascend Tuition, we use the analogy of ā€˜grabbing a rope’ meaning the use of resources of asking questions to help our learners move forward in their learning. Through our development of a growth mind set and use of challenges, we ensure that our students development a deeper understanding of concepts. There are many ways of ā€˜grabbing a rope’ and we can’t wait to share them with you. When was the last time you visited the learning pit? What was your ā€˜rope’ to help you get out?
