🤩 We're so excited for our participants to show you everything they have learnt and achieved when they perform 'Vibrations' at Birmingham Weekender this Saturday 27 August.

🦋 'Vibrations' explores the question “what do you feel when you hear music?" through movement, BSL and the motif of the butterfly, which is a strong symbol in the D/deaf community. 🦋

We hope you're able to join us outside the Entertainer at Bullring & Grand Central Birmingham at 12.45pm!

⏰ Less than 2 hours to go until the Commonwealth Games officially opens in Brum at Alexander Stadium!! We’re so proud of our city and so proud of all of our friends at DanceXchange’s Critical Mass, Autin Dance Theatre and Birmingham 2022 and all the other hundreds of thousands of people who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes on this fabulous show (and of course on the Games itself!🚴‍♀️🏊🏾‍♀️🏃🏽)- some of us have had a sneak peak at the rehearsals the other day and you’re in for a treat along with 35,000 people who’ll be watching it in the crowd and the 1 billion people who’ll be watching it on their TVs and tablets!

We’ll certainly be taking a break from working on D-Sign Dance project tonight and know that Deaf Men Dancing & DMD+, and in particular Mark Smith, their Artistic Director will be behind you and feeling all of the emotions too, as he choreographed the Paralympic Opening Ceremony in London back in 2012 – and so will know exactly how you’ll all be feeling!

Go smash it Birmingham!

Mark Smith

We’re so honoured to be able to work with the amazing Deaf Men Dancing & DMD+ on D-Sign Dance. The company was founded by their very brilliant Artistic Director Mark Smith and they’re renowned for being an innovative collaboration of male dancers/ choreographers who, like Mark, are deaf. Together they have created a fusion of differing styles of dance with sign-language incorporated into choreography creating a unique, interesting and original aesthetic. (Check out their beautiful showreel!)

They have performed all over the UK including DanceEast's 1st Anniversary Gala, E4's Battlefront, London’s 2012 Deaf Day, DadaFest's ‘Hands On’ and 's 20th Anniversary cabaret to name but a few.

D-Sign Dance is such a unique and special opportunity for anyone who like Mark and the team are deaf, aged between 13 and 30 years of age and want to learn to dance. Not only do you get to be guided by some extraordinary and experienced professionals, but you’ll also get the chance to perform at Birmingham Weekender in front of hundreds of people.

No experience is necessary, you just need to be available for the rehearsals on Tue 16 – Sat 20 & Tue 23 – Fri 26 Aug 10.00am – 3.00pm and the performance date on Saturday 27 August. Haute Feat. Billy Read – Unsilenced

There are SO MANY beautiful Deaf dancers around and so many are from the Midlands – including the very brilliant Billy Read, who is actually from our home town – Walsall!

Billy didn’t discover his talent for dance until the age of 21 thanks to his love of Michael Jackson's moves. Despite having no formal training, he has not only become a renowned dancer, but also has his own Deaf dance crew (Def Motion) that travels all around the world – pretty inspiring stuff hey?!

If you think you that you might like to follow in his footsteps, or at least want to give dance a go then sign up to join us for our taster workshop on Thursday 04 August at Walsall Arena & Arts Centre working with Deaf Men Dancing & DMD+ – we can’t promise you world travel, but we can promise you a starring role in D-Sign Dance at Birmingham Weekender on Saturday 27 August at BullringBirmingham!

You can find more info about D-Sign Dance from our website below or book directly with Maggie (deets also below), but in the meantime enjoy watching Billy in action in Unsilenced, a music video with HAUTE here; https://youtu.be/rzABLtFjNss

Oh and BTW, you can also see Billy perform live at the Birmingham 2022 live sites at Castle Vale on Friday 29 July and Sense on Saturday 30 July.

It’s Showtime!!
Meet EKO & Violet 💦🌊🐠🐬🐳

Photos from Black Country Dance Hub's post 14/06/2022

🐙🐳🐠🐚 As well as enjoying Autin Dance Theatre's Out of the Deep Blue tomorrow Wed 15 June at Walsall Arena & Arts Centre you can also purchase your own copy of the exclusive book ‘Violet and the Sea Giant’ that accompanies the show.

When they launched the book in March 2022, Autin asked the author ‘Pomme’ to answer a few questions about the story…

🐚 What was it like to write a book inspired by a live performance?

”It was a really different way of working – from the outside in rather than my usual way inside out. But the puppet Eko and the dancer playing Violet are inspiring and the subject of the crisis of climate and pollution in the ocean is so important. I felt very motivated and interested to find a way to explore and expand upon their story and take it inside myself in order to bring it out as a new piece of art inspired by Out of the Deep Blue. “

🐠 How relevant is the story to the children of today?
“I hope the story I created encourages children that small acts matter. That telling stories are important in understanding and sharing what is happening to planet Earth right now. I also hope they connect to the character of Violet, who feels that she is a bit of a misfit in her group and can’t find the confidence to speak out. She goes on her own journey to make new friends and to tell a story that is important to her.”

🐳What was the most challenging/rewarding character you've developed in the story?

“I loved finding ways to represent both Eko and Violet. But I invented Granny Ba (Violet’s grandmother) – someone who is carrying traditional values and culture and shows Violet how she might do the same. And also, I invented the wise seal. I wanted a character who was kind and soft, a contrast to Eko. In fact, I based the seal on a real seal in Greece a monk seal who swam around the waters of the Greek Islands. This seal was loved by many people in Greece as seals are quite rare there. He was a mascot to the islands and played with swimmers and was very friendly. My partner is Greek and he had told me that this beautiful seal was killed, and so my wise seal is in honour of the Greek monk seal.”

Thank you for creating and sharing such beautiful stories! Hope you can join us for the show and to pick up your copy.
