Wise - Create your future: Discovery workshop for girls, parents and teachers.

Date: Saturday, 28 June 2014 at 10.30am - 1.00pm.
Venue: Walsall College, Littleton St, Walsall, WS2 8ES.

The UK will need 87,000 engineers qualified at level 4+ and 69,000 qualified at level 3 in each year between now and 2020 to meet demand in the industry. An engineering technician apprenticeship is an increasingly popular entry route into the profession, as young people can earn whilst they learn, acquiring highly sought-after work experience prior before going onto study for a degree at a later stage if they so choose.

How much do you know about the wealth of exciting opportunities open to young people to work as technician engineers in the built environment?

Too many people - especially girls - dismiss engineering and construction as dirty, boring or not for them. We have organised a special event for girls, parents and teachers to meet young women who have chosen a career in engineering, find out what they actually do and why they love their jobs.

The event is targeted at:
• Girls aged 13-22 who have or are likely to achieve at least 5 GCSEs at Grade A*-C including English, Maths and at least one science subject. Girls who are creative, enjoy maths or sciences are likely to find this event particularly interesting – they may not have considered engineering.
• Their parents and family, who are likely to influence their career choices are also invited.
• School teachers and careers advisors are encouraged to attend, with students or independently, to increase their awareness of the opportunities for young women.
The morning will be highly interactive, giving girls a chance to:
• talk to role models, to dispel myths and stereotypes about the sector
• find out about the different qualifications available
• find out about the different pathways (including apprenticeship and graduate)
• to see the wide range of careers that are available within engineering and to meet prospective employers
