“Hey Lily, what did you do at Animal Insights last week?” I hear you ask! Well, I’ll tell you…

We looked at pollinators! One child had already started learning about the topic and brought in their butterfly lapbook to show us! As a group, we learnt about how plants reproduce and identified parts of a flower - using real life examples to help us see the huge variation in flowers’ sizes, shapes and colours. 🌷🪻🌹🌻

We also discovered how pollen is transferred from one flower to another, with the children’s crafted “pollinators”. It was a wonderful way to bring the science of pollination to life! 🌸🐝

We also discussed why pollinators are so important in our ecosystems and played a game to help show us the impact when we remove pollinators. That led us to discover some more u usual pollinator species, including birds, lizards and even small mammals! 🦎🐭

We ended the session by getting messy and making wildflower seed bombs to take away and scatter in our green spaces (which is okay because they’re native wildflower species!) 💚

Thank you to everyone who joined me for this fantastic session! 🦋🪲🐝

I’ll be honest, I’ve been struggling to show up on social media recently.

My zoology groups have still been quietly carrying on in the background (weekly sessions, messy activities, brilliant questions and loads of learning) and thanks to all the wonderful families who come along regularly, sessions have continued to stay fully booked even while I’ve been quiet online.

I think I’d started to feel like every post needed to be productive or promotional, when actually the reason I started teaching zoology in the first place was because of moments like this morning - a family walk in the fresh air, surrounded by birdsong and curious children making discoveries in nature.

So, while I share a couple of snaps from our morning, I want to say a huge thank you for continuing to support my small business and to share a reminder that some of the best learning moments happen when we slow down and simply notice the wildlife around us. 💚

What a fantastic day we had yesterday at WWT Welney Wetland Centre! 🪿🪺🌿

Our group enjoyed a wonderful guided walk, learning so much about the wetlands and the amazing wildlife around us. The Pond Room activities were a huge hit, from dissecting owl pellets and using super powerful microscopes, to planting seeds and discovering all sorts of fascinating things about nature.

We also had great fun pond dipping and using binoculars to spot the many beautiful birds around the reserve. 🦆🔍

A huge thank you to James and Alison for being such brilliant guides and making the day so engaging, educational and enjoyable for everyone. We all had an amazing time! 😊

What an AMAZING way to spend Earth Day! 🌍💚

We had the most fantastic visit to Sculthorpe Moor Nature Reserve today and it truly couldn’t have been better. Our guided tour around the reserve was packed with fascinating discoveries, but the real highlight had to be our extra special visit into the beaver enclosure! Seeing their incredible lodges and dams up close (and the trees they’d expertly gnawed down) was just brilliant. 🦫

When we reached the wetland hide, we were treated to some incredible wildlife sightings. We spotted red kites, common buzzards, a marsh harrier, lapwings, great egrets and so much more! Such a magical experience watching these birds in their natural home. 🦅

A huge thank you to Victoria and Jake for such an engaging and informative tour - your knowledge and enthusiasm made the day even more special. And of course, a big shoutout to the Hawk and Owl Trust for the amazing work they do. We especially loved watching the live camera feeds of their resident barn owls and the peregrine falcons at Norwich Cathedral! I’ll think their website in the comments so you can watch these as well. 🦉

Days like this are such a wonderful reminder of how important it is to protect and celebrate our natural world 🌿✨

Hello all! A few spaces have come up for next week’s trip! 🌿

We’re heading out on Wednesday 22nd April (visit starts at 10.30am) to Sculthorpe Moor Nature Reserve and have had a couple of last-minute cancellations, so there are a few spots available again.

It’s a guided tour of the reserve, where we’ll be learning about the local wildlife, including birds of prey and the reintroduction of beavers! 🦫

It should be a really lovely, relaxed session with lots for the children to see and learn.

Just £3.50 per person

Send me a message if you’d like to hear more 🙂

We had a lovely (if slightly rainy!) day out with our Animal Insights group at Church Farm Stow Bardolph | Rare Breeds Centre 🌧️🐑

The children enjoyed bottle feeding lambs, meeting rats and rabbits, a tractor ride to see the animals in the fields and a really brilliant guided nature walk with Nigel - we learnt so much from him!

This trip links perfectly with our Farm Animals session next week, as we focused on spotting the different types of enrichment the animals had to encourage their natural behaviours 🐾

A big thank you to all the staff at Church Farm who helped to organise so many memorable experiences and to the families who came along and made it all so fun!

And a huge thank you to King's Lynn & West Norfolk family hubs for supporting this trip and our Animal Insights group 💚
