Women continue to bear the brunt of domestic labor. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that women spend 47 minutes more than men on housework each day – that’s roughly 5.5 hours a week and doesn’t include other duties like childcare and grocery shopping. The solution requires a cultural shift in how we view the time of men versus women, and ultimately a domestic re-balance among couples.

Expert and best-selling author Eve Rodsky recommends partners begin with open communication and devise a plan to split duties equally, and fully own one’s responsibilities from start to finish.

It’s a collaboration, Eve notes when saying, “When we invite men to their full power in the home, we, as women can step out into our full power in the world.”

Maria Goeppert Mayer, born on this day in 1906, changed the field of nuclear physics by explaining the structure of atomic nuclei, a question that had evaded scientists for years.

Atoms consist of a nucleus made up of nucleons - protons and neutrons - surrounded by electrons distributed within shells with a fixed number of electrons. Goeppert Mayer was particularly interested in atomic nuclei in which the number of nucleons corresponded to full electron shells – so-called ‘magic numbers’. These type of nuclei are especially stable but no one knew why.

Goeppert Mayer was intrigued by the problem which she saw as a kind of ‘jigsaw puzzle’. She developed a model in which nucleons were distributed in shells with different energy levels – the nuclear shell model. The puzzle was solved and she went onto receive the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics.
