Huge congratulations to all our students who did exceptionally well in their GCSE examinations. It wasn't uncommon for students to improve two to three grades beyond where they were.

With a bit of help, guidance and support, students can really fly.

People sometimes say, oh, I'd love to have you tutor my child, but you're just too expensive.

Correct. You get what you pay for.

There are plenty of tutors charging less than I do.

Many are students, who are sometimes still in school themselves!

Many have never taught in a school...

Many have never marked GCSE papers...

Many have never led an English department...

Or even taught in a classroom...

Many have never been in charge of a school's teaching and learning...

Many have never done 18 years worth of cutting edge research about the science of learning...

What I offer is different.

I’ve spent years teaching English in different schools, leading departments and staff bodies, helping students navigate the exact challenges that cause grades to stall.

Parents don’t pick me because they want the cheapest option.

They pick me because they want the best.

They’re buying expertise.

They’re buying consistency.

They’re buying peace of mind.

They’re buying one less thing to worry about.

If that sounds like the kind of support your family is looking for, drop me a message.

Top Tip: Steer Clear of "Feature Spotting"

Examiners get incredibly frustrated when students identify a technique but fail to explain its effect. Writing "The writer uses a metaphor" without explaining why yields almost zero marks.

The name of the technique is only worth a fraction of the mark. The real money is in the explanation of the effect on the reader.

If a student can't remember if a phrase is a metaphor, a personification, or hyperbole, they shouldn't panic. It is much better to say "The writer uses the phrase '[quote]' to create a sense of..." and provide deep analysis, rather than getting the terminology wrong or just listing techniques without explaining them.

AQA Top Tip: Structure is About Time and Perspective (Paper 1, Q3)
Paper 1, Question 3 asks how the writer structures the text to interest the reader. Students often panic here because they try to analyse language instead of structure. Structure is simply the order in which information is given to the reader. The student needs to ask themselves three questions:

Where am I at the start? (e.g., A wide cinematic view of a landscape, or inside a character's head?)

Where does the focus shift? (Does it move from the outside weather to an inside room? From past to present? From a crowd to a single person?)

Why did the writer change the focus then? What is the effect on the reader? (e.g., Shifting from a peaceful conversation to a sudden loud noise creates dramatic tension).

One of my biggest tips for English Language or Literature: "Zoom In" on Single Words (The Micro-Analysis)

To hit the higher mark bands for language analysis, students need to move past general explanations and look at specific word choices.

Instead of saying: "The writer uses the phrase 'the wind howled viciously' to show it's stormy."

Try this: "The writer uses the phrase 'the wind howled viciously'. The verb 'howled' personifies the weather, suggesting a deliberate, predatory threat, while the adverb 'viciously' reinforces a sense of malice."

Tip: Analyse the quote as a whole, then pick out one single high-impact word to analyse in isolation.

Another great review from Erica in Thame.

"My daughter has really enjoyed and benefitted from her sessions with Andy when working towards her GCSEs. He has a way of making everything interesting and memorable, and my daughter is always engaged and feels energised after each session. He tailors each session to the student's needs and clearly has a deep understanding of his subject and the way it is examined. Under his guidance, my daughter's results have steadily improved as she has a deeper understanding of how to meet the subject requirements.

We would certainly recommend Andy to anyone looking for an English tutor - his help has been invaluable!"
