WHEN “LET’S MAKE A PROP” GETS A LITTLE OUT OF HAND…

One of the HUGE perks of being an independent, home-grown business is that we can let our imaginations run wild…

Meet our enormous Incy Wincy!

He’s become quite the celebrity at The Discovery Den and gets a guaranteed chorus of “WOW!”, giggles and very enthusiastic pointing every time he makes an appearance.

But our Incy Wincy isn't just there for the drama…

💙 Big visual props grab attention and help children focus
💛 Familiar rhymes + repetition support early language and memory
💙 Actions and signing encourage imitation and communication
💛 Watching Incy move helps develop visual tracking and understanding of movement
💙 Joining in with the song builds confidence, turn-taking and participation

There’s also something pretty special about taking a rhyme they already know and suddenly making it BIG, visual and turning it into something our little ones really can see, hear, touch, remember… and talk about!

This is exactly why we love being able to create our own resources at The Discovery Den.

🐍 Possibly my favourite activity EVER… I’m being SWALLOWED by a BOA CONSTRICTOR!

This little sketch from our Jungle Safari session gets me every single time.

There I am, happily minding my own business when suddenly…I’m being slowly swallowed by my very impressive (if slightly homemade-looking) boa constrictor!

The best bit? The suspense!

Our little ones know exactly what’s coming, but that doesn’t stop them watching with wide eyes as I disappear bit by bit.

And then comes the big PEEKABOO 👀 and that little moment of reassurance that I survived, just as important as the fun!

Huge shout-out to Hilary, now happily retired from Benson Library, who inspired this activity with her sleeping-bag version over 20 years ago!

Some ideas are just too good to retire!

“See You Later, Alligator!” 🐊

It’s our very special goodbye song that we sing to over 150 little ones every single week — and it’s become such a lovely part of our sensory adventures!

We searched high and low for the perfect song to finish our sessions, and this little gem has it all…

💃 Lots of opportunities to join in
🧠 Simple, repetitive actions and words that little ones can remember

It’s the perfect way to bring everyone together for one final sing, sign, wiggle and wave before we say goodbye!
