✋ It feels strange knowing that after months of meeting each week, today was the final GCSE Maths exam for my Year 11 students. ✍️

I’ve seen so many of you grow in confidence, tackle topics you once found difficult, and keep going even when things felt challenging. That’s something to be really proud of.

Thank you for letting me be part of your journey this year. Watching your progress, celebrating your wins, and seeing the hard work you’ve put in has been a real privilege.

Now the exams are done, take a moment to appreciate how far you’ve come. Whatever happens on results day, remember that your effort, resilience, and determination matter just as much as the grades.

Wishing every one of you the very best for the future. Thank you for making this year such a rewarding one. 🙏✨❤️

As an experienced maths teacher and tutor, I notice the same pattern every year with Year 10 students around this time…

“I just can’t do maths.”

But in most cases, it’s not a lack of ability. It’s gaps in understanding from Years 8 and 9 that were never fully secured.

Those missing pieces don’t disappear-they become the foundation students are expected to build on now. And without them, everything starts to feel much harder than it should.

GCSE Maths is demanding. Students need to understand abstract ideas, apply methods accurately, switch between topics, and clearly show their working-all under exam pressure. That’s a lot to manage.

But here’s the key: the students who begin to improve aren’t suddenly “more able.” They’ve simply had those gaps identified, and they start to see the structure behind the maths-what method to use, why it works, and how to present it clearly.

Once that clicks, maths stops feeling like a jumble of random topics and starts to make sense.
That’s something that can be taught. It’s not about natural ability-it’s about what’s been learned (and what might have been missed).

So if your Year 10 is saying they “can’t do maths,” don’t let that belief stick. It’s very rarely true.
I’m also running a Year 10 → 11 Summer Head Start Programme (June 15th – July 20th), designed to help students close gaps, finish the year strongly, and move into Year 11 with confidence.
