“Oh, I’m sorry… I was looking for a face-to-face tutor.”
I hear this more often than you might think — even though I’m an online tutor and only teach online! 💻📚
But before you automatically rule out online tuition, it’s worth knowing what a live online lesson can actually look like.
My students aren’t simply sitting watching a screen.
They’re ✏️ writing and annotating, ➗ solving problems, 💬 discussing ideas, 🙋 asking questions and receiving live, individual feedback throughout every session.
My online tuition groups are deliberately kept small, with a maximum of just 6 students, so I can continually check understanding and support each student individually.
And online tuition means geography doesn’t have to limit who your child can learn with.
📍 I’m based in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, but I tutor students across the UK — including Gloucester, Barnet, Essex and the Midlands — as well as internationally.
Some of the GCSE results and 11+ successes I’ve shared recently?
They were achieved by students I teach online.
From GCSE Maths and English Language to 11+ preparation, KS3 and Primary tuition, online learning can be interactive, personal and incredibly effective.
So if you’ve always thought, “My child needs face-to-face tuition,” perhaps don’t rule online tuition out quite yet.
📩 I currently have some availability for September.
Message me with your child’s year group + subject/exam they’re preparing for, and we can arrange a chat about whether my online tuition would be right for them.

Hi! I'm Fiona, a Wakefield-based, former Primary Assistant Head Teacher with 17 years’ experience. I'm Fiona. I love chocolate and cups of tea.
I tutor online, small groups to help learners become more confident in Primary Maths, English, 7+ and 11+ Exams, SATs, KS3 Maths & English and GCSE Maths. I own and run FB Tutoring, my online tutoring business. I'm obsessed with Hedgehogs and feed the wild ones that come into my garden.
Is your child starting Year 10 or Year 11 this September? 📚
The start of a new school year is a really good opportunity to work out where they are now — rather than waiting until GCSE mocks to discover there are gaps.
For GCSE Maths and GCSE English Language, I’d focus on three things:
✅ Know their current working grade and where the gaps are
✅ Target the specific skills or topics they find difficult
✅ Start working consistently now rather than waiting for Year 11 panic to set in
Small, regular improvements can add up to significant progress over the course of a GCSE year.
I’m Fiona from FB Tutoring, a qualified teacher with 18 years’ experience, offering specialist online GCSE Maths and English Language tuition to students in Wakefield, across the UK and internationally.
My September GCSE groups are now booking, with a maximum of 6 students per group and 55-minute interactive online lessons.
📩 If your child is starting Year 10 or Year 11 and you think they may need support, message me with their year group, subject and current working grade and I’ll let you know which option may be suitable.

📚 If your child often says, “I don’t know what to write,” this is one of my favourite creative-writing resources.

I regularly recommend Descriptosaurus to parents because it helps children develop descriptive vocabulary, generate ideas and use figurative language—including similes, metaphors and personification.
Children can find the section that matches their setting, character or idea, explore the suggested vocabulary and “magpie” words and short phrases to adapt within their own planning and writing.
The more regularly they use the book, the more likely they are to remember that language and begin using it independently in:
✨ Creative writing
✨ Setting and character descriptions
✨ Stories and narrative openings
✨ Diaries and letters
✨ 11 Plus writing tasks
✨ GCSE English Language Paper 1, Question 5
I use Descriptosaurus with my primary pupils from Year 3 to Year 6, my 11 Plus students and secondary pupils at KS3 and KS4. It can be particularly helpful for GCSE students who need a reminder of the descriptive-writing techniques that help bring a setting or narrative to life.
It is a resource children can return to for years—and it can even be passed down to younger siblings.

Looking for a quick creative writing activity to help your child practise their English skills before returning to school? ✍️
This 10-minute creative writing challenge can be adapted for:
📚 KS2 primary English
✏️ 11 Plus creative writing and entrance exam preparation
📝 GCSE English Language creative writing, including AQA Paper 1 Question 5
Choose any photograph and set a timer:
⏱️ 1 minute: choose one small detail to describe
⏱️ 1 minute: collect five interesting words or phrases
⏱️ 6 minutes: write one detailed descriptive paragraph
⏱️ 2 minutes: check and improve the writing
Encourage your child to use different sentence lengths, precise vocabulary, sensory description and one carefully chosen simile, metaphor or example of personification.
Primary pupils can concentrate on clear sentences, capital letters, full stops and interesting vocabulary.
Children preparing for the 11 Plus can practise varied sentence openings, figurative language and creating atmosphere.
GCSE English Language students can focus on deliberately controlling vocabulary, punctuation and sentence structure to affect the reader.
It’s only ten minutes, but it practises some of the most important creative and descriptive writing skills.
Save this activity to try later, share it with another parent and comment with PRIMARY, 11 PLUS or GCSE to let me know which level your child is working at.

🎉 FROM A GRADE 4 IN HER ENGLISH LANGUAGE MOCK… TO A GRADE 7 IN THE REAL GCSE! 🎉
Another GCSE success story that I absolutely had to share. ❤️
This student originally joined one of my GCSE Maths Higher online groups before moving to 1:1 tuition so that we could work on both Maths and English Language.
And the results?
📐 GCSE Maths Higher — Grade 5 ✅
📝 GCSE English Language — Grade 7! 🌟
That English result is particularly special because she had achieved a Grade 4 in her English Language mock.
Grade 4 ➡️ Grade 7!
What an incredible improvement. 🙌
We worked on developing her English Language skills, understanding exactly what the exam questions required and improving her exam technique, alongside preparing for her Higher Maths papers.
Her mum emailed me after results day to tell me:
💬 “She’s absolutely beaming!”
And she should be! ❤️
This is also such an important reminder for students going into Years 10 and 11:
Your mock grade does not have to be your final GCSE grade.
With targeted support, effective exam preparation and plenty of hard work, progress absolutely can happen.
I offer online GCSE Maths Foundation & Higher and AQA GCSE English Language tuition, both in small groups and 1:1.

🎉 GCSE MATHS SUCCESS STORY — SHE GOT THE GRADE 4 SHE NEEDED! 🎉
This was such a lovely email to receive from a parent after GCSE Results Day. 💗
Their daughter joined one of my GCSE Maths Foundation online tuition groups in the run-up to her exams.
For her, it wasn’t just about learning more maths.
A big part of our work was about building confidence.
Going into three GCSE Maths papers can feel incredibly daunting when maths isn’t a subject you naturally feel confident in. Sometimes students know far more than they think they do — they just need support, reassurance and plenty of opportunities to practise those skills.
And she did it. 🙌
⭐ Grade 4 in GCSE Maths Foundation — PASS! ⭐
Exactly the result she needed, and she was absolutely delighted.
Then yesterday I received this message from her parent:
💬 “Just a quick email to let you know [name] passed maths. Thank you for all your help on the run up to her exams.”
Messages like this mean so much.
Because behind that Grade 4 is a young person who went into those exams feeling more confident than she had before — and came out with the qualification she needed.
If your child is going into Year 10 or Year 11 this September and GCSE Maths Foundation is already a worry, they don’t need to wait until the final few months before their exams to get support.
My online GCSE Maths tuition groups focus on developing mathematical skills, exam technique and, importantly, confidence.
