🇿🇦 Day 2

Sorry for the delay everyone, WiFi was not on our side to keep you updated but we are back from South Africa after 2 weeks. It was incredible and the students can't wait to show you what they got up to on their project. We kept reviewing each night so keep following us for updates about each day.

At this part of the project students were helping the staff to conserve and monitor populations on the Zingela Game Reserve. The guides were so informative and the students loved working so closely with experts and locals.

Breakfast is at 7am and we had some visitors by the river 🐗. First thing we checked the fish traps and found some shrimp and a fish. We looked at the impact the river quality was having on populations and discussed ways to improve and monitor river quality. 🏞🐟🦐

Next students hiked up to three survey areas where they learnt how to set up pitfall traps and funnel traps with Phil. Students were taught how to set up the traps safely and managed to set up 3 survey areas! 🦂🦎🪣

🏞🥪We then had lunch by the river before moving on to small mammal traps. Students learnt how and why the game reserve monitors small mammal populations and the need for these animals within the ecosystem along with the importance in order to bring larger birds and mammals into the area. 🐀🦅

Before returning to camp, students completed another mini SASS at this secrion of the river to assess the water quality, they found a range of invertebrates, including dragonfly larvea and found that the water quality was "natural condition" [8.2-8.6] (which is fantastic!)

All of the data that students collect is used and collated for the game reserves research and contributes to a large data set. Students are helping experts collect important data in order to help them re-wild and re-inrroduce wildlife into the game reserve which was once agricultural land 🐆🦒🦇🦅🦉🐟🐸🐢

Students kayaked their way back to camp 🏕 🛶 before collating their data and having some well deserved supper! After supper we had a presentation by Phil about his Croc research and the importance of monitoring and supporting Croc populations. 🐊📝

Keep following us for updates: Day 3 coming up! See if we managed to catch anything in our traps 🪣🪤

✈️🇿🇦 So slight detour on our study project to South Africa. There was a delay on our outbound flight, which made us miss our connecting flight from Frankfurt to Johannesburg. But we didn't let that get us down and made the most of our stop over in Frankfurt 🇩🇪.

We've made a busy day out of it, visiting historic sites⛪️🏰, trying out local cuisine🥨🌭, and navigating public transport🚇🚍.

And most importantly valuble life lessons, i.e. what to do when you miss your flight and find yourself in unfamiliar territory. 🙈

We even found time to do an ecology survey in the local woods. Can you identify the species we found.. comment your answers below. 🪳🦅🐸🦆

Day 5-Monday 3rd April
Chloe, Level 3 Animal Management student tells us about day 5.

"Today we started the day by doing yards at 8am it was very cold and we had to keep wiggling our toes and fingers to keep the feeling in them. Once yards were over and done with we came back to warm up in the clubhouse filing up on a delicious breakfast of cereal and toast.

Today was the day that the Vet was coming to visit so we were extremely excited to see if anything differed to how we do it over in England. So we went back down to the stables and watched her give the horses a routine flu and tetanus vaccination. We then watched her give Peggy a check-up because she is a rescue. They found out she had lice so we would have to give her some medicated shampoo to give her a bath.

After, we brought London for his eyes to be flushed. Some of the girls bravely held him whilst a syringe went up his nose to flush out a blockage from his eyes. It was so interesting to watch! Then it was Bandy and Enia's turn to have their teeth cleaned by rasping so some of us got to hold them back whilst the vet put a device that held their jaw open whilst she rasped and checked their teeth. The horses were very heavy to try and hold up. We made sure to ask the vet lots of questions about Sweden animal veterinary work and told her a bit about what it's like in England and all about the horses we have. It was really cool to get involved and actually be able to help out the veterinarian!"

A group of our level 3 students from across Animal Management and equine are currently out in Sweden learning about the sport of Equine Vaulting, this mixed group activity allows the students to share their knowledge and skills whilst developing new ones, it looks like they are having an amazing time!

Caprifolens Voltigeklubb Everything is Possible

Day 2-Friday 31st March
Millie, Level 3 Animal Management students talks us through day 2.

'Friday we started off doing the yard activities at 8am and learning all the Swedish ways! With the help of long term volunteers Gabe and Aiktz giving a detailed yard induction.
We learnt to muck out the different substances and had fun getting confused with the feeds translating from Swedish.
We also turned out the horses and cheeky pony, Peggy who will take some getting used too!
After lunch we brought in Max and Peggy.
Checking signs of health in the horses such as the hooves and behaviour which is really helpful in understanding equine health. We then talked gave the ponies a full groom.
After, we prepared Baro for loose schooling and set up some small jumps to help exercise all his upper and lower leg muscles and discussed why it is important for keeping a horse strong and fit.
Finally we tacked up Enia and London to have our first go in the arena with Flo and Carol helping us.
I really enjoyed getting lots of hands on time with the horses and getting back in the saddle. In between riding we did some stretches with Flo and all managed to get our hands on the floor with our legs straight... after some hard work!
We made Spaghetti Bolognese for supper but overestimated the amount of spaghetti needed!'

"Learning is in our nature" was definitely the motto for our curriculum staff last week. A selection of Animal Management staff and wildlife park staff attended AnMan Con 2023 at Eccles college as part of our ongoing professional development. This involved guest lectures and workshops from a fantastic range of speakers covering topics such as developments in animal training, integration of technology in teaching, conservation projects UK and abroad and a host of other fantastic talks.
All the staff thoroughly enjoyed the conference and came back with some excellent ideas and information to improve teaching and opportunities for our learners.
Huge thank you to the team involved in organising a fantastic event.
