🌿 HOW DO I FIX MY POOR GARDEN?! 🌿
If your garden is looking a little bit crispy, sad and frankly rather sorry for itself after this summer’s heatwave… you are definitely not alone! 🥵🌱
We’ve had so many customers coming in saying their plants have either completely given up or are hanging on for dear life — and after the run of hot weather we’ve had, it’s hardly surprising.
The good news is… don’t give up on it yet! ❤️
Now that things are starting to cool down and we have some rain on the horizon, there are a few things you can do to help your garden recover.
🌿 CUT BACK TIRED PERENNIALS
If your perennials are scorched, brown or looking miserable, cut them back! ✂️
They don’t need to spend precious energy trying to flower or maintain damaged foliage. Cutting them back allows the plant to concentrate on its roots and recovery.
Don’t be frightened of giving them a good haircut — many will surprise you and come back with fresh growth.
💧 WATER DEEPLY, NOT LITTLE AND OFTEN
Once we get some rain, make the most of it. For plants that are struggling, a really good soak around the roots is much more useful than a quick sprinkle over the leaves.
And remember — mulch is your friend! A good layer around plants helps keep moisture in the soil and protects those precious roots.
🌱 DON’T WRITE OFF A PLANT TOO QUICKLY
Brown doesn’t always mean dead! Scratch a little bit of stem — if there is green underneath, there’s life there. Give it some time before reaching for the spade.
🌾 LAWNS LOOKING LIKE STRAW?
Try not to panic and don’t immediately scalp it! Once the rain arrives, raise your mower height and give the grass a chance to recover. Avoid mowing too short while it’s stressed and, where possible, stay off badly damaged areas until they’ve had a chance to green up again.
🌸 LOST PLANTS? NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO REPLACE THEM
If some of your plants genuinely haven’t made it, we’ve got lots of our cut-back perennials available for just £5 each or 5 for £20 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿
They may not look like much right now — because we’ve cut them back! 😂 — but this is actually a great time to get them into the ground. They’ll concentrate on establishing their roots now and you’ll have strong plants ready to go next year.
And remember… winter bedding is just around the corner! 🌸🍂
From September onwards, we’ll also be heading into hedging season, including bare-root hedging whips and rootball hedging — so if your garden needs a bit of a rethink after this summer, now is a good time to start planning.
So, before you declare your garden a complete disaster and rip everything out… give it a chance! 😂
A bit of rain, a good haircut, some TLC and a little patience could bring far more of it back than you think. 🌿❤️
Pop in and see us if you’re not sure what can be saved — we’re always happy to have a look and help you work out what needs rescuing, replacing or simply leaving alone!
