Uplands Academy

Uplands Academy A non-selective, co-educational secondary school in the heart of Wadhurst, East Sussex Uplands Academy is a special place to learn.

Visitors to Uplands always comment on the calm, warm, friendly and purposeful atmosphere at the school. This atmosphere is born of the fact that we approach each other with respect, kindness and compassion within a culture of high expectations and aspirations. The core purpose of Uplands Academy is to inspire confident learners in an ever-changing world. We promote the development of all students,

where the love of learning is nourished and where every child is known, cared for and guided towards a fulfilling adult life. We believe strongly in a ‘growth mindset’ ethos, which supports every student to achieve his or her goals. As a truly comprehensive school, we understand this success can be achieved through dedication and hard work. We encourage an ambitious attitude to learning where respect for one’s school and community; a readiness to learn; and a responsibility for one’s own learning and success are key to ensuring our core values of ‘respectful, ready and responsible’ are fostered and upheld. At Uplands, we want every student to leave school capable not only of following their chosen career path, but also confident, articulate and able to lead happy, successful, and fulfilling lives. Finally, as a Academy, we believe we have a central role to play in our local area, from forging excellent working relationships with our closest primary schools to supporting local charities and organisations and thereby instilling in young people, an understanding of their role and responsibilities in a wider community.

Huge congratulations to our Year 11 students! 🎉

Today we are proud and delighted to be celebrating the achievements of our students as they receive their GCSE and equivalent results.

Their outcomes reflect years of hard work, resilience and determination, and will enable them to take their next steps towards some truly impressive and well-deserved futures.

On behalf of everyone at Uplands Academy and MARK Education Trust, we congratulate our students and celebrate all they have accomplished, both through their own hard work and with the unwavering support of their parents, carers and our incredible staff.

Headteacher Chris Connor said:

"We are particularly pleased that these outcomes also continue an upward trend over recent years, demonstrating the sustained improvement across our whole school community and reflecting the collective commitment of our students, staff and families to achieving excellence."

Zoe James, who takes up the role of Headteacher in September, said:

"On behalf of everyone at Uplands Academy, I would like to thank our dedicated staff and supportive families, whose tireless efforts and unwavering support have helped guide our students to success. Whether students are progressing to sixth form, college, apprenticeships or other exciting opportunities, we wish them every success as they begin the next stage of their journey."

To our wonderful students, thank you for your fantastic contribution to life at Uplands Academy. We look forward to keeping in touch through our Alumni Network and hearing all about your future adventures and achievements!

🎉 Our Student Leadership Team certainly made sure the last week of term was one to remember!

On Friday 17 July, students enjoyed our fantastic alfresco Summer Fair, and what a success it was! The stalls were incredible, showcasing the time, effort and creativity that students had put into planning and running the event.

Visitors were treated to lucky dips, cake stalls, ice creams, drinks, handmade crafts, games, and tombolas, creating a brilliant atmosphere for everyone 🍭🍦

💜 Thanks to the hard work of our students and the generosity of our school community, we are delighted to announce that the Summer Fair raised over £1,000. We will announce the final amount at the beginning of next term.

All proceeds will contribute to our annual fundraising total and will be shared equally between our three chosen charities:

⭐Demelza Charity
⭐Save the Children UK
⭐Cancer Research UK

A huge thank you to everyone who supported the event and helped make it such a success. We'd also like to give a special shout-out to Mx Hopkins, Mrs Callow and Ms Necci for all their hard work behind the scenes.

What a wonderful way to end the school year and make a positive difference to others! 🌟

🌱🍅 Last term, a group of our Year 10 and 11 students rolled up their sleeves during Work Experience week to create raised vegetable beds in our orchard and garden area. We’re delighted to see their hard work is being rewarded!

Thanks to the dedication of a group of green-fingered students and the guidance of Mr Dwyer, Mr Sandoval, Miss Webber and Miss Finnegan, the beds are now producing a fantastic variety of herbs, lettuce and tomatoes. Even better, some of the fresh produce has been used by both our Chartwells catering team and Food Technology department – a wonderful example of growing and enjoying food right here at Uplands Academy.

A huge well done to everyone involved!

🎨📸 On 10 July, Miss Reilly, Head of Art led our Year 10 Art and Photography students on an inspiring trip to Tate Modern in London. The walk from London Waterloo East station provided the perfect opportunity for students to capture striking scenery and architectural features that caught their eye.

Students explored the free collection galleries on Levels 1 and 3 at Tate Modern, encountering iconic works by some of the world's most celebrated artists. The displays included artwork by internationally recognised figures such as Henri Matisse, Andy Warhol, Pacita Abad, Francesca Woodman and Richard Long.

Through paintings, sculpture, photography, installation and multimedia works, students gained insight into how artists use different approaches to communicate ideas and engage audiences. The visit offered an exciting opportunity to experience significant examples of modern and contemporary art in one of the world's leading galleries.

Well done to all students who took part in the trip. Miss Reilly commented, ''All students represented Uplands Academy with maturity, curiosity and enthusiasm and were an absolute credit to our school''.

🏏 U13 Cricket vs Beacon Academy 🏏

Well done to our U13 cricket team, who travelled to Beacon Academy for an exciting 15-over fixture yesterday.

Facing a strong Beacon side that included two county players, our team showed fantastic determination throughout. There were some standout moments in the field, with excellent catches from Quinn, Max and James, while Quinn also impressed with two wickets. We were especially proud to field a mixed team of boys and girls, with Issy, Quinn and Anjali all making valuable contributions.

Despite a challenging start to our innings, the team battled hard, with Max producing some superb batting to get Uplands on the scoreboard.

The players have shown incredible enthusiasm and commitment during the past 12 weeks of cricket club with Bells Yew Green, and this match was a great way to showcase their progress. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and can't wait to see them continue to develop next year.

👏 Congratulations to Ansh, Jasper, Finlay, Fin, James, Quinn, Anjali, Issy, Max, Harry and Thomas on a fantastic season of cricket!

👩‍🍳🎨This week, we were delighted to welcome over 100 Year 4 and 5 pupils from our local primary schools to Uplands Academy for a series of exciting Taster Sessions.

Held after school on Monday 13th and Wednesday 15th July, the sessions gave pupils the opportunity to experience a range of subjects and activities, including Sports Squad, Stage Stars, Tech Trailblazers, Art Aces, Creative Cooks and Code Creators.

Throughout the sessions, pupils enjoyed making cookies and pizzas, designing and building wooden cars, creating beautiful pieces of artwork using a variety of techniques, taking part in Kin-Ball and football activities, learning coding skills, and developing their confidence through drama improvisation workshops.

Mrs Purser, Senior Assistant Headteacher, commented: "It was fantastic to see how enthusiastically the pupils embraced these sessions. They were fully engaged throughout and clearly enjoyed the opportunity to explore subjects and activities that may not be available to them at primary school. We hope they enjoyed their taste of life at Uplands Academy, and we look forward to welcoming many of them back in the future when they begin their secondary school journey''.

A huge thank you to all of our staff who organised and delivered such engaging and inspiring experiences.
