I am passionate in sharing the many tools that work for me and my aim is to share the enjoyment and benefits of yoga and meditation to empower others to enjoy life fully, in balance, and with positivity. I really enjoy bringing a sense of fun and joy to my classes, workshops and retreats, helping students to see that yoga moves deeper than being ‘on the mat’ and is an opportunity to develop an internal awareness that can help you realise your full potential.

Viktor Frankl, one of the great psychiatrists of the twentieth century, survived the death camps of N**i Germany. His little book, Man’s Search for Meaning, is one of those life-changing books that everyone should read.

Frankl once told the story of a woman who called him in the middle of the night to calmly inform him she was about to commit su***de. Frankl kept her on the phone and talked her through her depression, giving her reason after reason to carry on living. Finally she promised she would not take her life, and she kept her word.

When they later met, Frankl asked which reason had persuaded her to live?

“None of them,” she told him.

What then influenced her to go on living, he pressed?

Her answer was simple, it was Frankl’s willingness to listen to her in the middle of the night. A world in which there was someone ready to listen to another’s pain seemed to her a world in which it was worthwhile to live.

Often, it is not the brilliant argument that makes the difference. Sometimes the small act of listening is the greatest gift we can give.

Sunflowers have long been the national flower of the Ukraine, but in 1996 they were also chosen as a symbol of world peace, and a world free of nuclear weapons.

This event took place when Ukraine gave up its last nuclear warhead on a former Ukraine missile base, on June 4th 1996.

The US, Russia, and Ukraine were all present at this event, and the then Secretary of US Defence, William Perry, said, “Sunflowers instead of missiles in the soil will ensure peace for future generations.”

They celebrated by scattering and planting sunflower seeds on the site, and also at nuclear disaster sites throughout the world…Fukushima, Chernobyl, Hiroshima…..

May those scattered sunflower seeds be remembered today, and their message bloom in the hearts of all, bringing about the changes needed to restore peace once again to the Ukraine and her people.

Children do it instinctively - give yourself a hug.

Hugs are good medicine. During times of stress, they provide an immediate release and relief. Yet in the time of social distancing and pandemic, we may have much LESS access to touch, even when we might need it the most.

Hugs boost oxytocin levels. Elevated oxytocin levels lead to lessening of feelings of anger, loneliness, and isolation.

Hugs raise serotonin levels. Elevated Serotonin levels improve your mood, create a sense of well being, and help to regulate your sleep cycle.

Hugs release endorphins. Endorphins are the body’s natural pain relievers, so getting a hug will actually help soothe aches and pains.

Hugs increase production of dopamine. Dopamine is produced in the reward center of the brain and makes you feel happy, relieves depression, and just makes you feel good.

Hugs reduce levels of circulating cortisol in the blood. Cortisol is known as the stress hormone. By reducing the amount of cortisol circulating in the blood, hugs can alleviate stress and calm the mind.

Hugs lower blood pressure. Hugs activate pressure receptors in the skin called pacinian corpuscles, which send signals to the part of your brain responsible for lowering blood pressure.

Hugs strengthen your immune system. Hugs can help stimulate the thymus gland which regulates the body’s production of white blood cells, which fight off disease.

Hugs relax your muscles. Hugs relieve tension in the body and soothe pain. As a result, they increase circulation to the soft tissue and alleviate bodily tension.

So what happens, during periods of physical distancing and social isolation? Using the findings, I just described about the neuropsychology of hugs, we can actually learn to hug ourselves. What does someone do when they want to comfort another in distress? They may place their hand on their shoulder or rub their arm. This starts the beginning of a cascade of dopamine and another neurotransmitter called GABA.

GABA is found throughout the brain (cortex). It functions to regulate anxiety using all of your senses, including touch, sound, and vision. Wrap your arms around yourself, crossing them across your chest. Slowly, stroke up and down your arms and shoulders. If you do this as part of a self soothing practice, the brain starts simulating the same effects as if someone you care for is actually hugging you. Someone you care for IS hugging you. You.
