Thursdays sure do come round quickly! Off to coach the brilliant Vocalize Youth Choir this evening followed by Vocalize - Pop, Rock, Soul and Motown Choir.

Just had our annual show screening and wow it was an absolute roof raiser. Everyone across both choirs did themselves proud.

Many choir members have chosen to have 1-1 vocal coaching over the past year and I’m delighted to see all the hard work paying off. There were some truly mesmerising moments!

🎁 Today it’s my Birthday 🎂 !! But it’s got me thinking about a particular song…

🎤 As a vocal coach, I’ve come to the conclusion that “Happy Birthday” is less of a song… and more of a social experiment.

🎶 It always starts off with one confident volunteer who launches into a key they’ve chosen with absolutely no consultation.

Everyone joins in.

Then the problems begin…

📈 The key was too high.
😳 The highest note arrives.
😬 Chins lift.
😬 Jaws clench.
😬 Shoulders rise.
🎶 Pitch leaves the room entirely.

By the final line:

• One person is shouting.
• One person is whispering.
• Someone’s singing a harmony they swear is intentional.
• The basses are just moving their lips and hoping for the best.

The irony?

Nobody is actually a bad singer.

They’ve just been set up for failure by a member of the party, who thought they were the families answer to Celine Dion for three glorious seconds. 😂

🎤 Vocal coach’s tip for beginners: Start lower than you think as a group or if someone starts too high, sing down the octave. “Happy Birthday” spans an octave jump, so the first note decides whether the last note is joyful… or a cry for help 😭

Slightly more advanced tip: try some SOVT exercises to help out with those vocal breaks and the transition 📈 between registers as you navigate that octave jump! Things like straws, puffy cheeks ooo’s, lip trills, V or Z fricatives to name a few. 🎤✨ WHAT AN AMAZING DAY AT FERNDOWN’S FETE IN THE FIELD! ✨🎤

We had the absolute best time bringing the music and performing songs from our Previous Decades Show! 🎶🔥

The atmosphere was buzzing, the field was full of smiles, laughter and amazing energy. It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying the music, singing along and sharing such a brilliant day with us! 🌞🎉

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by, supported us and made it such a memorable performance. We loved being part of this wonderful community event and hope everyone had as much fun as we did!
