Students often start to feel the pressure now, especially if it's an important exam year, of the build-up of homework. Below are some tips on how to deal with the anxiety and overwhelming negative thoughts.
1) Do a two weekly planner - Either on paper or a whiteboard, plan you time over a two week period. Write down all the due dates of homework and plan how long it will take you to complete each task. Then write on the planner when you will allocate time to each task over the two weeks. Often the overwhelming feelings disappear once you plan, as you can see how and when a task will be completed.
2) When planning, be realistic - by this I mean think about what plans you have for the weekend etc. There needs to be a life-work (not a work-life) balance, so don't be hard on yourself when you take time off and step away from the demands of homework and revision.
3) Homework doesn't necessarily have to be done at home - use study periods at school to complete tasks. Take the pressure of your home-life!
4) Create a nice work space. Don't study on your bed. Study areas are important for mindsets and energy. Make sure your space is clean and away from other home stress/noise. Or if you can't find a space away, pop some ear-buds in and listen to some music as you work.
5) Take breaks - work for an hour at a time and take a break. Go grab a drink and some food or have a conversation with someone to take your mind off the task you have been trying to complete. After 10-15 minutes go back and finish.
6) Find a study buddy - not someone who will distract you, but someone who wants to concentrate too.
7) Move your phone / IPad out of the way - resist the temptation to scroll through social media. I must admit, I find this really hard, but for 'super' concentration it has to be done.
8) Ask for help - if you are stuck with a task, don't be afraid to ask for help from a teacher, tutor, friend or parent.
7) Finally, believe - You've got this!
