Today, the Church bursts into song โ for today is the birthday of Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Church celebrates Mary's birthday on September 8 โ a date that falls exactly nine months after the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on December 8. Every year, the liturgy invites the faithful to pause and marvel at this extraordinary gift: a human life, conceived and born in the normal way, yet unlike any other.
The Roman Martyrology proclaims that Mary was "of the lineage of Abraham, born of the tribe of Judah and of the progeny of King David." She was born to be the Mother of the Saviour of the world, the spiritual mother of all men, and the holiest of God's creatures โ and because of her Son's infinite merits, she was conceived and born immaculate and full of grace.
๐ฏ๏ธ How to Celebrate Today
- Attend Holy Mass and offer it in thanksgiving for the gift of Our Lady
- Pray the Rosary โ since Mary always points us to her Son, we can attend Mass, read Scripture concerning her role in salvation, and pray the Most Holy Rosary
- Honour Ss. Anne and Joachim โ pray for the grandparents and elderly in your life; they carry wisdom and intercession beyond measure
- Pray for families across the diocese โ especially those waiting on God, struggling with infertility, or raising children in challenging situations.
๐น Happy Birthday, Our Lady! โ Pray for us, Holy Mother of God, and for all the faithful of the Diocese of Shrewsbury.
