TEAPOT COURSE : LATE CANCELLATION. Please Share, thank you!

We’ve just had a very late cancellation for my forthcoming Teapot course, which is an Intermediate Improvers running from next Wednesday afternoon 21st at 2pm, for 4.5 days until Sunday 25th July. This course runs every other year, so next opportunity isn’t until 2023. Here are some further details. Please DM me if you are interested. You’ll find further details about our courses here on the website: www.workshops-at-wobage.co.uk

The Casson's have simple self-catering available in the Wobage Farmhouse, at £35 per night.

Spread over 4½ days, this course is aimed at more experienced makers to develop their Teapot making in wheel-thrown stoneware. The course will however cater for intermediate and advanced students at different levels of capability.

Students will be encouraged to experiment with different scale and style of vessel. A strong emphasis will be placed upon developing different configurations for lids and galleries. We will also cover clay preparation and wedging techniques along with the range of throwing techniques required to make better upright and spherical forms more efficiently and confidently. Students will be encouraged to look closely at the weights and measures of their teapots and to challenge these in relation to ergonomics and fitness to purpose. One-to-one and group tutorial will be tailored to inspire students to develop new skills and to imaginatively expand upon their own individual range of pots.

The studio invites a maximum of 9 students for this course. Each participant will enjoy unlimited access to our high-quality stoneware clay, and a power wheel for the full duration. The wheel models are predominantly Fitzwilliam Rayefcos along with a couple of Alsagers. There is a Saviac kick-wheel if anyone prefers to treadle their way to their ultimate teapot-making!

The course begins on the afternoon of Wednesday 21st July, 2pm – 5pm, through to 4pm Sunday 25th. Tuition hours otherwise are 10am-4pm. The studio is freely available for students to work outside of these hours, early or late.

Fabulous home-made vegetarian lunches along with morning and afternoon refreshments are included in the price of this course.
Students will be invited to select two favourite teapots to be salt-glazed and wood-fired at a cost of £4/lb. A maximum of 4 further teapots may be selected for bisque firing, priced at £1.50/lb and as much work as you wish can be taken home green at £1/lb.

Through good times, or those more challenging, our friend and former boss, Mick Casson, is often in my thoughts. Petra and I worked for him as part-time apprentices at Wobage between 1995 and his death in December 2003.
I remember his softness, his wisdom, generosity and fairness so vividly. Whether we were sat chatting during a kiln firing, or around the farmhouse table drinking tea, conversation was always rich, diverse and uplifting. There is one dynamic aspect of his personality from which I perhaps learned most importantly; that even when you presently believe strongly in one thing or another, you must remain open to be wrong, and willing with an open mind, to change your opinion, maybe just a little, or completely! This presence of mind has inspired me in every facet of living. But especially in my creative journey. I’d love to hear from those of you who have been influenced by Mick, in whatever ways, whether you knew him personally or not. These pics were taken in about 1997, by William Moss.

A few pots from the yield of the last evening class firing of the new Phoenix wood-salt kiln. Once the kiln is cool and the draw is made, they are often whisked away to new homes much too quickly! These weighing scale pile ups are a pleasurable time for reflection and discussion with students; surface, colour, textures, weight, ergonomics, varying position of pots in the pack, successes and subs! Always I am trying to keep everyone’s mind open towards the unexpected and the serendipities of the firing. Some beautiful results you talented mudslingers!

First evening-class students firing in the new Phoenix wood-salt kiln. Plenty of very exciting results!
