KENT TEST CHANGES FOR 2027
There has been an important change behind the Kent Test for children sitting the exam in September 2027.
Kent County Council has awarded its new Kent Test contract to Atom Learning Limited, trading as Quest Assessments, meaning the assessment provider will change from GL Assessment.
For families preparing now, the most important thing to understand is that a new provider does not mean that everything your child has been preparing for is suddenly irrelevant. Kent County Council decides what the Kent Test should assess. The test provider then develops the test to meet that specification.
At the moment, KCC has not confirmed whether there will be changes to the format, timings, weighting, question types or structure of the test.
Quest assessments are used in other areas, for example Bexley, but this does not mean the Kent Test will be changed to copy that format. Assessment providers routinely produce different test formats for different areas.
Do we need to make any changes to preparation?
The short answer is no - not yet. There are no immediate changes needed until more information regarding the 2027 test structure is available.
For English and Maths, the skills needed remain the same as before:
• secure Year 5 Maths
• fluent and accurate arithmetic
• strong problem solving
• confident comprehension
• a broad vocabulary
• careful reading
• the ability to apply knowledge to unfamiliar questions
These skills are the foundations of successful preparation.
The Kent Test has, for a number of years, included verbal, non-verbal and most recently spatial reasoning. These are not National Curriculum subjects, and until KCC advise on whether there will be any changes to the Reasoning we will continue to cover them.
Once more is known, we will review and restructure our teaching if necessary.
For those parents preparing their child themselves, my advice is to do the same. The provider has changed, but the core skills your child needs have not.
Please share this with any family who has a child currently in Year 5, as not everyone will yet be aware of the change.
