EBSA part 39: What is EBSA? Emotionally Based School Avoidance might involve school based anxiety or other dysregulation. There can be many causes but 3 of the most common are environmental factors, social issues and trigger events. It’s important to unpick what is going on and make plan. EBSA part 38: Stop saying “school refusal “. The neurodivergent child who is struggling to go to school is not refusing. It’s a case of can’t not won’t. To get them back into school we need a plan with the child at the centre. Which is why I’ll talk about how to do this in my online workshop; Emotionally Based School Avoidance.

EBSA part 36: Can school affect mental health? Have you seen this clip? It from a podcast interview with Peter Gray; the author of.

This may confirm what teachers and parents have thought for some time. The causes can be numerous but may include social issues, lack of autonomy especially for PDA children, or a small trigger event that might seem insignificant to an adult but means a lot to a child.

The best approach is to look at barriers to attendance and then work with the child make a plan with them at the centre. I’ll go into this in more detail in my online workshop.
