As the week wraps up, I’ve been reflecting on how often HR only gets involved once a situation has already escalated.

More often than not, it’s not because people don’t care — it’s because the decision felt uncomfortable at the time.

In reality, the organisations that cope best are those willing to pause early, ask the difficult questions, and make clear decisions they can stand behind.

Experience has taught me that calm judgement and timing matter far more than having the “perfect” policy.

Yesterday, the UK’s first female Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, cried in Parliament.

Some saw weakness. I saw leadership.

As an HR professional, wellbeing advocate, and woman who’s worked with businesses of all shapes and sizes, I know that emotion is not the opposite of strength—it’s a sign of humanity. And we need more of it at the top.

Reeves’ tears weren’t just personal. They were generational. They carried the weight of a historic moment, of barriers broken, of centuries of silence giving way to visibility. Whether you agreed with her politics or not, it was a raw, real expression of what it means to lead with both head and heart.

In workplaces, I’ve seen too many people—especially women—told to “hold it together” when what they really needed was space to be human. To be heard. To be whole.

So here’s what I took from that moment:
• Emotion and composure can coexist.
• Visibility matters—it changes what the next generation believes is possible.
• Compassion in leadership is not a “nice to have”—it’s a necessity.
