I’ve just had a new student, and I am BUZZING! I had the most wonderful message the other day, from a ‘grown up’ student who’d decided to tackle maths GCSE. Not for her career, not because she wants to return to education, just for herself!

She was worried about returning to maths, never having enjoyed it at school, and admitted to a sleepless night before our first session.

We spent our first session diving straight into a GCSE paper - slaying dragons and making her realise that she knows far more than she thinks…. Maths is everywhere and she’s been using it daily without even realising.

I can’t wait to introduce her to some new maths next week - hopefully without the sleepless night this time!

I have LOVED the fact that it’s back to school week!! Lovely new faces and old friends returning to the classroom.

I’ve just had my second A level Chemistry session with Alex… the first week of A levels is basically a confessional - “remember all that stuff we learned about how electrons behave last year, well I was LYING! Here’s how it really works!”. Thankfully Alex has forgiven me, and we’ve made a cracking start to the term!

Wow, the summer holidays have flown by, and today is ‘Back to School Day’ for me!

So excited to see last year’s gang, and meet some new students too!

I’m afraid I’ve only got one ‘after school’ space left for this year, which is a fortnightly slot on a Wednesday at 4pm, so act quickly if you’d like to grab it!

Slightly ranty post….

The media is filled with posts about youngsters “sweeping the board with a full set of Grade 9’s”. While I’m not making light of that huge achievement, where are the posts about the others?

The ones that struggle? The ones for whom school is a battleground? The ones whose brains work a little differently? The ones who worked phenomenally hard, and achieved lower grades?

For those students, and I work with plenty of them, sometimes just entering the exam room is a victory in itself.

So I celebrate you ALL!

Yesterday I had happy tears for Jessica, who missed out on year 11 at school, but achieved a 4 in maths and a 6 in English a year later.

I cheered for Alex who got 3 Grade 5’s in science despite being out of mainstream education since year 4 due to complex educational needs.

I commiserated with a student who didn’t get the pass she needed in maths, and discussed what her options are going forward.

These ones, who won’t be reported in any newspaper article, who worked their absolute socks off and who deserve just as much celebration. I see you. I’m cheering for you!

So, your child hasn’t passed their GCSE maths? What’s next? It’s tempting to say “well, if you just work harder, you’ll pass it next time”. To me, that sounds like “climb that mountain again, just run a bit faster”. Sound tempting? Nope.

So how can we frame it differently?

If they didn’t get the grade this time, we need to think about working DIFFERENTLY, not harder. For most resit students, it’s not about ‘getting better at maths’. It’s about getting a grade 4 so that maths will leave them alone!

And honestly - that’s where private tuition makes the difference. Focussed, individual support, targeting only the weakest areas and where we can bag the most marks. Really dialling in on the exam technique. Boosting the confidence that they will nail the level 4 next time.

Resits in November are only a few months away. And I’ve got a few spaces left. Act now to bag one, and we can hopefully get your child over the finish line so they can retire gracefully from maths forever!

Quick lunchtime update for Hugo and Lotta….

Hugo smashed it out of the park with a clean sweep of 5’s for his sciences and maths!

Lotta nailed a 6/7 (yes…. I said it!) for science and a 5 for maths.

Both into their college courses, easy peasy!

Local superstar Amy has just sent me the most lovely beaming photo of herself brandishing her results…. 6’s in maths and science, 3 grade 8’s in English, Media and Art and a handful of other brilliant ones too. So so proud of you, missy!

Next two results are in…. 5-5 for Joel in dual science, and a 4 for Jessica in maths! So proud of both of them, and wishing them every success in their next steps!

Boom! And the first results are in - 5’s for all three sciences for homeschooler Alex!

With complex diagnoses and a challenging and constant battle for the funding and support he needs, these results are a true testament to his commitment and hard work and I am BUZZING!!

Next step for us is A levels in maths and Chemistry and I cannot WAIT to get cracking in a few weeks time!
