Everyone says A-Level is a step up, which makes it sound like the same thing with more of it.

It’s a different subject with the same name.

At GCSE they get marks for saying true things. At A-Level, true isn’t enough. They get marks for choosing which true things matter to that question and explaining why.

So the grade makes no sense to them, because by their old standards the answer was right. It was. It was also the wrong shape.

Three A-Levels is the narrowest sixth form education in the developed world.

France, Germany, Singapore, they keep 5 or 6 subjects to 18. We drop to 3 at 16 and call it specialising.

And the subject they pick is worth over half a million pounds across a working life, according to government research from June.

I’m dyslexic. At 16 I moved school entirely to get away from English.

I lasted 3 days.

Came back, ended up doing the IB, and the IB wouldn’t let me drop it. Got 42 out of 45, and English turned out to be one of the best things I did…

I tried to shut that door. I moved schools to shut it.

Same test. Same grades. The girls still rated themselves lower.

When they say they got lucky, that isn’t modesty. It’s a bad reading of their own evidence, and it decides which subjects they drop.

Don’t argue about it, that never works. Go and look at their last three marks in that subject together and let the numbers do it.

Government commissioned research, published in June. On average a graduate is about £100,000 better off across a lifetime.

But medicine and economics take home over £400,000 more, and the average performing arts graduate is around £60,000 worse off. Roughly one in five graduates ends up worse off overall.

That is not an argument against university. It is an argument for knowing what the trade is before you make it at seventeen.

The UCAS deadline is not the one that catches people out.
Medicine, the UCAT is being sat right now, registration closes 16 September. Law, the LNAT closes 15 September. Maths, sciences and a lot of the Oxford humanities, the 28th.
Access arrangements close on the 14th of September, and that’s the one people miss…
None of it is on the UCAS form.

Grade boundaries are set after the papers are marked, based on how everyone did. Hard paper, boundaries drop.

So the same raw mark can be a 6 one year and a 7 the next.

When they say it was horrible, that isn’t necessarily bad news, because it was probably horrible for everyone. And a mock marked to last year’s boundaries is an estimate, not a grade.

There’s a lot of pressure on teenagers to find their passion, and it makes things worse.

The moment a subject becomes something they’re supposed to love, not loving it turns into evidence they’re in the wrong place. That’s a much bigger conclusion than “I find chemistry boring”.

Competence and enjoyment usually arrive together, but competence comes first far more often.
