✨ INTRODUCING... Guest Artist Yael Karavan

We’re going INTERNATIONAL for our third Guest Artist Workshop! 🌍🤩 All the way from Lisbon, we’re delighted to welcome the extraordinary Yael Karavan to our 2026 Physical Theatre LAB!

An award-winning performer, director and Butoh specialist, Yael has spent nearly three decades creating and performing work in theatres, festivals, and unconventional spaces around the world. Her work is often described as “visual poetry”, drawing on Butoh, dance, mime, clown, physical and visual theatre.

For our LAB, Yael will lead the cohort through an intensive exploration of Butoh - from the philosophy of its founding members to its current relevance today - as a tool of creation, revolution and transformation. The workshop will explore elements of metamorphosis, presence, emptiness, contrast, repetitive cycles, dance through images, and tension between opposites. The aim is to free the body from its preconceived mundane set of gestures, thus allowing a deeper and more essential expression.

This will be SUCH a unique and transformative experience for our cohort, we can’t wait to watch them dive in! 🌱

✨ INTRODUCING... Guest Artist Ben Duke

Next up in our introductions is the LEGENDARY Ben Duke, Artistic Director of award-winning dance/theatre company Lost Dog. Ben will lead the second Guest Artist workshop in our 2026 Physical Theatre LAB! 🚀

Ben’s work sits at the intersection of dance, theatre and literature, creating bold, playful and deeply human work that finds new ways to tell stories. As Artistic Director of Lost Dog, he has created award-winning work including Ruination: The True Story of Medea; Paradise Lost (lies unopened beside me); and Juliet and Romeo.

For our LAB, Ben will draw on Lost Dog’s unique approach to reimagining classic stories. The cohort will explore where dance meets theatre and theatre meets dance, investigating narrative, character and physicality, and discovering what happens when literary inspiration meets choreographic invention.

We can’t wait to see what stories, characters and movement emerge from the studio! 🔥

✨ INTRODUCING... guest artist Christopher Evans

We’re THRILLED to welcome the sensational Chris Evans to our 2026 Physical Theatre LAB! 🚀

A movement director, choreographer, performer and theatre maker, Chris is an Associate Director with Gecko and a former founding member of Hofesh Shechter Company. His work spans the West End, Broadway, China and beyond, including Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Fiddler on the Roof and The Deal.

Our Artistic Director Katie has had the pleasure and privilege of working alongside Chris for many years through Gecko, and we’re over the moon that he is able to come to Cornwall to share his wealth of experience and rich creative practice with our 2026 cohort!

For the LAB, Chris’s workshop will start with a question fundamental to his process when it comes to making movement that communicates narrative: how do we hold audience attention? From this expands a set of practical techniques and tools that sharpen intention and invite the audience into the shared game of finding meaning in what we make.

Looking at the raw ingredients of rhythm, detail and attention, Chris offers approaches to rapid making and skilful ex*****on, helping performers create physical material that feels clear, purposeful and alive.

We can’t wait to see what our cohort discovers with Chris! 🔥

We’ve loved revealing our 2026 Creative Rise cohort to you over the past few weeks - 11 brilliant emerging artists, each bringing their own practices, perspectives and creative energy to the programme 🚀🔥

Now that you know who they are, don’t miss the chance to catch them in action at our Open Studio on Friday 11th September, 2–4pm AMATA Arts Centre in Penryn!

The Open Studio marks the culmination of their intensive two-week Physical Theatre LAB which begins next week! They’ll be working with an exciting line-up of guest artists and putting new ideas, tools and techniques into practice through collaborative devising.

Come and see what they create together, and join us for drinks, nibbles and informal conversation afterwards. 🎭🥂

Her interdisciplinary practice brings together performance, producing and devising, with collaboration and curiosity at its heart. Jamie is excited to connect with fellow South West artists, build lasting creative relationships, and play her part in a thriving creative community here in Cornwall.

Meet Nick, a director, performer and creative who grew up here in Cornwall and is now finding his way back into theatre after a career in events and brand marketing. This year he’s performed in the RSC’s Shakespeare Nation at Hall For Cornwall and directed a new play called Alf. Nick is looking forward to the spontaneity of devising, having the time to play play play, and soaking up all the inspiration he can!

Joining our 2026 cohort is Honey, a dance artist and singer-songwriter whose practice brings together movement, music, voice and theatre. Having recently graduated from Falmouth University, she’s chosen to stay in Cornwall to begin the next chapter of her creative journey. Honey is looking forward to discovering new ways of creating and performing, building new creative connections, and using Creative Rise as a stepping stone into professional life.
