A message from Sensory Trust!

We are coming to the end of our 2-year project of Climate Cooler Schools. It has been great seeing the students' progress, learning new skills and getting a deeper understanding of how plants are cooling the planet and rebalancing the water cycle.

The students have changed several areas in their school, including a mini woodland, 2 wildflower areas and a series of planters.

The latest development has seen the entrance to the school be transformed into a climate cooling wonder! 3 planters have been planted with climate resilient plants; obelisks have got climbers growing up them and a wildflower mini meadow has been planted. This will give a fantastic display in the summer terms and year-round interest in the planters. This shows everyone who arrives at the school how committed Pencalenick is to work with plants to cool the planet, slow the flow of water and get water into the ground. Ultimately helping to rebalance the water cycle and reduce the impact of floods, wildfires and droughts.

The students have learnt skills that they can take back into their homes and communities and may even use in the future for jobs and volunteering. They have really taken on board the issues of climate change and how by increasing the number of plants we can all be part of the solution. Through a deeper understanding of what the planet needs and skills for how to care for it the students can make a positive impact in the future.

Sensory Trust has been so impressed with the commitment the school has made and is excited to see how they develop the ideas and skills even further!

The annual Jubilee Challenge took place on May 8th and 9th and as usual, Pencalenick Boarders were there with a team!

The challenge is a part of the Ten Tors event and is open to teams of pupils aged 14 and over. They have to camp overnight and then undertake a walk the next day on Dartmoor.

There are three walks of different lengths and pupils choose which walk they want to undertake.

We use some of their time in Boarding to practice their navigating skills using maps and compasses, going for walks of increasing length to build stamina and learn to work together as a team.

This year the team of eight pupils chose the 11 mile walk and completed it in a really good time even though they stopped for lunch and a paddle in a stream which apparently was freezing!

Medals were awarded at the Finish line with three pupils gaining their Gold Medals.

Very Well Done to Shanice, Joe, Hector, Mason, Louie, Bailey, Harry and Will. We are very proud of you all!

On Friday 8th May, pupils across the school took part in “Wear the Colours of Our Planet – Celebrating 100 years of David Attenborough” by dressing in blues, greens, and nature or animal-themed clothing.

There was a wide range of activities taking place across school, including sensory trays inspired by our planet, meet-the-animal sessions, sorting actions that are good and bad for the environment, sequencing the life of David Attenborough, and debating the use of single-use plastics.

All pupils reflected on their own actions and created a climate pledge, which were displayed together as a tree to show how everyone can play a part in protecting our planet, no matter how small the action may seem.

It was fantastic to see pupils considering both small everyday actions, such as switching lights off, and larger-scale changes, such as walking instead of making short car journeys.

A huge thank you to all staff and families who supported the day and helped make it such a meaningful whole-school event.

Last term in Creative Arts, Heligan Class explored the work of Georgia O’Keeffe, famous for her large-scale images of flowers and plants.

During this topic, pupils developed their skills in observation, observational drawing, and photography. They began by working on a small scale, decorating two tiles using real petals and leaves, which were then brought together to create a whole-class collaborative piece.

Once they had built these skills, they were ready to create a large-scale artwork inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe. The class voted on which of their photographs they wanted to use as inspiration for their shared piece, helping to choose colours and shades of collage materials.

Working as a team over several lessons, everyone contributed to creating a beautiful large-scale image, which the pupils proudly presented today to Miss Coombes for her office!
