For more than two decades, Truro School has developed one of the UK's most successful fencing pathways, producing national champions, international medallists, Olympians and Team GB representatives.

As Truro School enters an exciting new chapter with the UK Fencing Project, it's been wonderful to hear from some of our alumni whose lives have been shaped by the fencing programme at Truro School and who agree that its impact stretches far beyond sporting success.

Maria Chart (CO17), two-time national champion and now a Mechanical Engineer specialising in sustainable building design, reflects: "Truro Fencing Club was the heart of my community when I was growing up, and still is in many ways today."

Will Deary (CO15), four-time British Champion, European Games medallist and AI software engineer, credits fencing with teaching the discipline and time-management skills that continue to shape his career.

Max Cromie (CO21), Great Britain international and postgraduate researcher at UCL, describes the programme in just three words: "Excellent. Supreme. Generational."

A remarkable wildlife discovery on our school site could represent the first recorded evidence of European praying mantises breeding in Cornwall.

Ten praying mantis nymphs were recently discovered on our site and have been submitted to the Environmental Records Centre for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (ERCCIS) for recording.

The nymphs were spotted by Olly, son of Truro School’s Head of Boarding, David McKeown, near an open window in the family’s accommodation on the school grounds.

The discovery has generated excitement among local wildlife recorders, with further investigations now underway to try to locate the egg case, known as an ootheca, from which the nymphs emerged.

A Year of Excellent Results

This year’s results were exceptional right across the board. Congratulations also go to Sarang, who achieved an outstanding eleven grade 9s; James B and James F, who each achieved nine 9s and an 8; Hannah, with ten 9s and an 8; Wendy, with nine 9s and an 8; Kai, with ten grade 9s, and Genevieve, with eight 9s, an 8 and a 7.

And there are so many more stories of hard work and success behind today’s results, including Naomi, Maya, Connie, Yu Qi, Tansy, Freddie, Sheba, Leah and Nathan, to name but a few.

Whatever comes next, all of our incredible Year 11 pupils finish their year with results to be proud of. Congratulations to you all.

Every Pathway Celebrated

Not every pupil is staying on the same, expected route, and that variety was something to celebrate in its own right.

Erin is heading off to study Health and Social Care with the hope of pursuing a military and apprenticeship route, something she credits to the careers talks she attended at school: “I went to lots of careers talks here, with midwifery and nursing, and they were really interesting and informative about all the pathways available.”

Matilda is moving on to college to study the International Baccalaureate, while Joseph will be studying Maths, Further Maths and Physics independently with a home tutor.

Others, like Clara, who is staying on to study Biology, Chemistry, Music and EPQ, is choosing to remain at Truro School for “the small classes and the individual support. My brother stayed for Sixth Form and got amazing support, and I want to study at the new music centre too.”

Eva’s Mum described a similar journey through the school to her GCSEs, in which Eva achieved four grade 9s and five 7s. “She’s had a really good journey through the school, from Prep Year 3 all the way through,” she said. “We’ve been delighted by the support she’s been given from all of her teachers. The Sixth Form is such a special environment where the young adults are really well looked after.”

Growing Beyond the Classroom

For plenty of pupils, it was what happened outside lessons that shaped their years at Truro School just as much as what happened inside them.

Kes, who achieved five grade 8s and five 9s, and is staying on at Truro School for Sixth Form to study History, Geology and Music, credited the school’s clinics and one-to-one support with helping him understand exactly what he needed to improve, but it was music that he came back to when asked what had really helped him grow. Extra-curricular music and drama, he said, “puts you in different stressful but great situations that help you become better experienced at life.”

His Mum spoke about the space the school had given him to find his own interests, including starting his own folk band. “Every child is different, every child is an individual, and they need the space and scope to develop those interests. Truro School supports that.”

Matilda felt the same pull towards co-curricular life: “I’ve done lots of extra-curricular stuff, and it’s really helped with friendships – all my closest friends have been made through extra-curriculars, and they’ve really shaped who I am. I think doing these co-curriculars has helped me figure out what I want to do next year and in the future.”

Teachers Who Believe in You

Several pupils spoke about moments of real doubt turning into some of their proudest results.

Oliver came away with grades two levels higher than expected, including a 7 in English where he’d been predicted a 4 or 5. “I was expecting a 5 or a 4, and I actually got a 7, so I’ve got the marks I need for college,” he said. “The teachers have been really supportive and nice. Because the school is small, everyone knows each other and helps each other out.”

His Mum agreed: “The teachers are really helpful with the social side too, with friendships and orientation. I had the sense that the staff were all looking after Oliver.”

Scarlett, who achieved two 9s, five 8s and three 7s, had a similar story with maths, having been predicted a 5 and coming away with an 8. “I was really, really worried about maths, and I ended up with an 8, so I’m really happy about that,” she said. “The moment I opened my results, I went straight to my maths teacher to say thank you, because they were the ones who made it possible.”

Erin, another pupil who came away with results well above her expectations, described the reassurance her teachers gave her in the run-up to exams: “I was really nervous about physics, as it’s a subject I struggle with, but I’m really happy to have come out with a 7. I think I emailed my teachers a million times saying I was going to fail, and they always helped me calm down and talked me through it. I’d leave feeling much more confident.”

Every Pupil Matters
For many pupils today, it was the feeling of being genuinely known within the Truro School community that had helped their academic successes.
Joseph, who got ten grade 9s, acknowledged the staff who had gone the extra mile for him: "Truro School has had people who have gone above and beyond. They've helped all the way through and pushed me to have a real drive to go as far as I can. They've had a real impact, not just on my education but on me as a person."
His Mum agreed there had been a real effort to find what made him tick: "There are teachers who go above and beyond all the time. They've tried every way to engage him and find his niche path. The teachers are amazing."
Alice, who did far better than expected, including an 8 in English, felt the same closeness to her teachers. "I've gone up to my teachers individually and asked for help, and they've really helped me through some tough times," she said. "I like the smaller classrooms, and the feeling that you're really close to the teachers."
Matilda, who achieved six grade 9s, two 8s and a 7, singled out the confidence it gave her to ask for help without feeling judged: "Being able to ask, and not be treated like an idiot for asking, is great. Mrs Egar was just amazing; she really understood how I was struggling."
Her Dad reflected on watching his two children thrive at Truro School. "They're very different people, and that's what's so brilliant: they've both thrived here. It's such a broad range of subjects, from academic to creative. It's been a journey, and I couldn't be happier."
For Clara, who picked up nine grades at 8 and 9, individual attention mattered hugely. "It's probably been the individual support from each teacher, like my history teacher, since Year 7," she said. "I had learning support too, with one-to-one sessions each week on revision strategies and exam stress."
Her Dad noted that Truro School had gone beyond expectations. "Even though Clara works hard for her grades, she has significant learning needs, and the school helped with those when they could have just said she was doing okay anyway. They made sure she achieved the best outcome, and that really impressed me."

Behind the Grades: The Stories Behind GCSE Results Day

Year 11 pupils and their families were all smiles at Truro School this morning as another excellent set of GCSE results came in, with more than half of all grades awarded at 9-7, making them the strongest results the school has seen since the pandemic.

Behind those numbers are our individual pupils, each with their own results and their own story of how they got there. We look forward to sharing some of those with you across the day.

Truro School is celebrating another excellent set of GCSE results, with more than half of all grades awarded at 9–7, the strongest since the pandemic.

Our cohort of 69 girls and 71 boys, day pupils and boarders, secured 676 grades at 9-7 between them, 53% of all the grades achieved, compared to the national average of 22%. Six of our boys and girls achieved straight 9s, and 23 achieved all grades 9–7 in their GCSEs.

These excellent GCSEs come the week after Truro School celebrated its strongest A-Level and Level 3 results in over a decade, with 80% of grades awarded at A*–B and 50% at A*/A.

Head of Truro School, Mr Andy Johnson, said: “I am extremely proud of this cohort. They now have empowering pathways to Sixth Form, post-16 education, and training. Their grades reward their ability and hard work, as well as the care and expertise of our staff. Of equal importance to the results, however, are their wider achievements. They have relished life beyond the classroom, in sport, the creative arts, leadership, and service to the wider community. They now have not only these qualifications, but also the wider skills, experiences, and values to thrive in Sixth Form and beyond. They should be proud too.”

Away from the classroom, our Year 11s have excelled in a wide range of activities enabled via our Middle Years Portfolio framework. Amongst many other sporting successes, the U16 Hockey team reached the national finals. They have taken to the stage in plays, concerts, and musicals, including ones written by their own year group. This year group also contains the school’s largest-ever cohort of Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award participants, and have been able to explore France, Spain, Iceland, Morocco, Germany and Peru.

Balancing personal growth and development alongside academic progress, and being able to excel in both, requires ambition and resilience, alongside the strong individual and pastoral support we offer at Truro School. As our pupils look ahead to Truro School Sixth Form or opportunities elsewhere, we thank them for all they have brought to our community as we celebrate their success.

Truro School is delighted to celebrate that Mrs Lucy Jupp, Head of Year 12, has completed the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Counsellor Accreditation.

Lucy undertook the programme of study over the summer term, earning the internationally recognised title of Times Higher Education Accredited Counsellor in University Admissions. The accreditation recognises her extensive experience and expertise in supporting students as they navigate one of the most important decisions of their lives.

Reflecting on her achievement, Lucy said, “This accreditation was important to me because it provides formal recognition of the experience, expertise and reputation I have developed over many years in guiding students through the university admissions process.”

The eight-week programme was both comprehensive and demanding, with Lucy completing 12 modules covering a wide range of topics. These included managing stakeholders, working with senior leadership and parents, strengthening best practice in counselling, and exploring emerging trends such as the future of work and education.

The course also examined the growing role of artificial intelligence in university admissions and careers guidance. As part of the accreditation, Lucy submitted an essay to the Times Higher Education panel, titled AI: A New Challenge for the University Counselling Profession. Here, she explored the evolving relationship between technology and university counselling.

Lucy explained: “I argued that while AI can support tasks such as CV drafting, course research, essay planning and administrative work, students may over-trust AI outputs unless they are taught to use these tools critically, ethically and reflectively.”

She also highlighted the continued importance of the human element in guidance: “The essay also emphasised that AI cannot replace human judgement. A university counsellor remains best placed to understand a student’s hopes, fears, ambitions and individual circumstances, and to support them in identifying their best-fit university, something no algorithm can fully emulate.”

As a Times Higher Education-accredited counsellor, Lucy’s accreditation adds further distinction to Truro School’s Sixth Form offering. This recognition strengthens the School’s offering to current and prospective families, and reflects its ongoing commitment to providing outstanding support for students preparing for life beyond school.

Lucy concluded: “I am very pleased to have completed it and look forward to using the learning to further strengthen the guidance we offer to students and families.”

Her achievement is a testament to her dedication, professionalism and passion for supporting young people, and further enhances the expert guidance available to our Sixth Formers at Truro School.
