School Car Park Closure

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have been informed this morning that the construction company carrying out the roadworks outside school will be moving further along the road. As a result, they will be working directly across the school entrance gate.

This means that the school car park will be closed to all parents except Blue Badge holders for this afternoon’s pick‑up, and this is expected to remain the case for both morning and afternoon drop‑off/collection over the next couple of days.

If you are able to walk to collect your child, we strongly encourage you to do so. Otherwise, please use the surrounding estates to park and walk in via the rear gates. We will continue to keep you updated as the situation progresses.

Unfortunately, this disruption is completely outside of our control, and we appreciate that it may cause inconvenience. Parents will need to allow extra time to park elsewhere, and Blue Badge holders will need to use the exit gate for both entering and leaving the car park. Please take extra care and be mindful of other road users.

The construction company has the appropriate permits in place, and the works will only be in place for a limited period to allow them to complete the necessary improvements.

We are very fortunate to be able to offer parent parking at all, as many local schools do not provide access to their car parks and rely entirely on surrounding streets. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this temporary disruption.

🌊 A Huge Thank You to the RNLI Lifeguards Newquay! 🛟

We had a fantastic visit yesterday from the RNLI Lifeguards, who delivered their brilliant Water Smart Assembly to our pupils. The children learned important life‑saving skills and practical tips to help them stay safe while enjoying our beautiful Cornish beaches this summer.

They covered everything from:
✔️ How to spot the safest place to swim
✔️ Understanding beach flags and what they mean
✔️ What to do in an emergency
✔️ How to “Float to Live”
✔️ The do’s and don’ts when playing near the water

The session was fun, interactive, and packed with valuable information that helps prepare our children to make safe and confident choices by the sea.

A huge thank you to the RNLI team for the incredible work they do and for supporting our community with essential water‑safety education. 🧡

📚✨ Once Upon a World Book Day… ✨📚

Today our school transformed into a storybook kingdom, where mini wizards, pirates, princesses, woodland creatures, superheroes, detectives, and even a few mischievous villains wandered the corridors! Every child arrived dressed as their favourite book character and the creativity was wonderful to see!

And the fun didn’t stop there! Our brave young illustrators turned potatoes into storybook stars for our Potato Character Challenge — from spud-sized dragons to potato princesses, each creation was wonderfully imaginative! 🥔🌟 Don’t worry if your character is still growing its personality over the weekend… bring it in on Monday before we select each class’s potato champion. Small prizes await the winning spuds!

🏴 St Piran’s Day! 🏴
Gool Peran Lowen!
We had a wonderful day on Thursday celebrating Cornwall’s rich heritage and the patron saint of tinners!
The whole school rolled up their sleeves to make traditional Cornish pasties. The children absolutely loved the experience — we hope you enjoyed baking the pasty at home to enjoy together! 🥟✨ Special thanks to our wonderful parent volunteers who were the stars of the day, excellent crimping skills!

Our St Piran’s Day Assembly was buzzing with excitement. The hall became a sea of black, white, gold and tartan as we celebrated the incredible culture and history of Cornwall. We began and ended our day with a proud rendition of the Cornish National Anthem, filling the hall and school car park with real Cornish spirit. 🎤🏴

Throughout the day, children explored their Cornish heritage in class, learnt about local traditions, and celebrated the special place we call home.

A truly brilliant St Piran’s Day — full of pride, pasties, and plenty of smiles! 🖤🤍💛

On Monday, our Year 1–6 children were treated to a fantastic performance by Ed Rowe (The Kernow King) and Dan from The Cornish Caretakers. They brought Cornwall’s history and culture to life with their hilarious storytelling — from the precious Cornish Chough, to our iconic Cornish hedges, and even the historic uprising against the King!
There was plenty of laughter from children and staff as everyone enjoyed learning in such a fun and memorable way.
Meanwhile, Year 3 also took part in a brilliant workshop exploring Cornish history and even tried their hand at playing a traditional Cornish board game.
What a fantastic way to kick off the week’s learning — full of excitement, culture and Cornish pride! 🖤🤍🌿

🌟 WHAT AN AMAZING WEEK OF LEARNING AT ST ERME SCHOOL! 🌟
Our pupils have been curious, creative, active and imaginative — and we can’t wait to share what they’ve been up to across the school! 👇✨

🐸🌱 Frogmore – Reception Class
Frogmore have been diving deeper into their topic on endangered animals.
Last week they explored plastic pollution in the ocean, and this week they ventured into the rainforest, discovering why so many animals are losing their habitats. The children have absolutely loved hands‑on learning, using sunshine‑filled moments to explore outdoors with a range of exciting resources. ☀️🌿
They’ve also enjoyed some lively parachute games in the hall and have begun Drawing Club — a wonderfully fun and imaginative way to develop early literacy skills!

🌼🔤 Trehane – Preschool
Our preschoolers have had a super busy week exploring outdoors, building, creating and experimenting!
✨ Mark‑making and construction activities have kept little hands busy.
✨ The Phonics focus was the sound S, which inspired smoothie making, strawberry painting, and even snakes! A sensory, creative, and delicious week all round. 🐍🍓🥤

⚔️📏 Pengelly – Year 5 & 6
Pengelly have been true historians this week, creating chronological timelines of Viking Britain, plotting key events and battles with increasing confidence.
In Maths, they’ve been continuing their work on volume. After building 3D shapes with cubes last week, they have now been applying that understanding to calculate the volume of cuboids and compare or estimate the volume of a variety of shapes. Fantastic problem‑solving from our older pupils! 💡📐

🦘✍️ Boswiddle – Year 1
Boswiddle have been busy with their English learning, drawing Australian animals and using adjectives and verbs to bring them to life!
They are now preparing to write their own page for a class book inspired by ‘Wombat Goes Walkabout’ by Michael Morpurgo. We can’t wait to see their creativity shine! 🇦🇺📚

🏺✏️📏 Truthan – Year 3
Truthan Class have made a fantastic start to their new learning adventures.
✍️ English:
They’ve begun writing short paragraphs inspired by The Egyptian Cinderella, carefully working in synonyms, similes, conjunctions, adverbs, and remembering those all‑important capital letters and commas. Wonderful writing progress!
📏 Maths:
A new topic on length and perimeter has seen pupils measuring in mm, cm, and m, and converting between them with growing accuracy.
🎨 Art:
They explored two new types of media to build on their ongoing watercolour work — and the results are truly marvellous. Beautiful creativity from Truthan Class this week! 🌈🎨

🌟 ANOTHER BUSY & BRILLIANT WEEK AT ST ERME! 🌟

Our classrooms have been full of creativity, curiosity and collaboration this week. Here’s a snapshot of what our pupils have been learning across the school 👇

✏️📚 Year 3 – Truthan Class Thinking Hard & Creating!
Year 3 have had a fantastic week of focused learning and creativity.

📝 English:
They’ve been sharpening their SPaG skills, confidently using conjunctions, fronted adverbials and apostrophes to improve their writing — brilliant progress and enthusiasm shown!
🧮 Maths:
The children have been mastering multiplication using flexible partitioning, breaking numbers into parts to make calculations clearer and more meaningful.
🎨 Art:
Using water paints, they explored movement, texture and brush strokes, experimenting with colour and developing their artistic control.
📮 Geography & Writing:
They also created fact‑file postcards about England, researching and sharing fascinating facts about places and features across our country.

🌍✍️ Year 4 & 5 – Trevella Class Adventure Continues!
The excitement is building in Trevella!
📖 Guided Reading:
The family in their novel are well into their voyage around the world… but as we know, calm seas don’t last forever!
✍️ English & Experience Day:
As part of their writing unit, the characters have decided on an escape plan. During their experience day, pupils designed and built rafts using natural materials — with some incredibly creative and imaginative ideas. We can’t wait to see if their plans succeed next week!
🧮 Maths:
They’ve completed their multiplication and division unit, consolidating written methods, exploring factor pairs, common factors, prime numbers, and for Year 5, square and cube numbers too.
⚔️ History:
They’ve begun studying key events in Viking Britain, developing chronology skills by placing events in order.
❤️‍🩹 Science:
This week’s focus was the heart, learning about its different parts and how blood travels from the heart around the body.

🏃‍♀️💪 Year 5 & 6 – Pengelly Class PE Power!
Pengelly Class have been working hard in PE over the past few weeks, building stamina, flexibility and strength. Their determination and teamwork have been fantastic to see!

🔥🏠 Year 1 – Boswiddle Class History Detectives!
Year 1 have been learning all about the Great Fire of London.
This week, they investigated the features of buildings from the time and explored why they burned so easily — thoughtful discussions and great historical thinking!

🚓💙 Keeping Our School Community Safe 💙🚓

We’d like to say a huge thank you to the Devon & Cornwall Police Road Safety Team, who visited our school again this morning to help keep our pupils and community safe.

During their visit, two drivers were found to be exceeding the 20mph speed limit — travelling at 26mph and 31mph. While disappointing, this highlights just how important these safety checks are around our school and village.

We are incredibly grateful for the Police team’s continued support and commitment to road safety. Their presence helps remind everyone to slow down, stay alert, and think about the safety of our children and families.

Please help us support this important message by driving carefully, observing the speed limit, and encouraging others to do the same.

Together, we can keep our school streets safe for everyone. 💛
