Ethical Rebel

Ethical Rebel Who makes your clothes? Are they paid fairly? Treated fairly? Or are there slaves in the supply chain? What's in your clothes? Are your clothes made from plastic?

Are they contributing to climate change and the environmental crisis? Despite the desire for ethically made clothing, most mainstream garments are NOT ethically sourced. Money saved by buying cheap clothing usually results in harm to someone else - sometimes even their life. The number of ethical brands are growing. And we need to celebrate and support them so they can continue creating clothes th

at bless rather than harm the people who make them and the environment. Our Story

During my fashion degree I learnt a lot about what goes on behind the scenes in the fashion industry. I was shocked at how much people and the planet suffer to make our clothes. Ethical Rebel is a response to that call to change the industry. My mission is to make sure others know the risks garment makers, dyers, weavers, spinners and farmers take to make their clothes and to help people find clothes they love that do not cause harm to people or the planet. Ethical fashion is fun, gorgeous, adventurous and exciting. We do not need to harm people or the planet to have fantastic clothes. One day I hope the abuses will no longer be tolerated. One day I will see these abuses outlawed and a fashion industry leading the way in how it treats its workers and the planet. One day Ethical Rebel will no longer be needed. I’m looking forward to that day. Until then, I hope you find what we do useful in transforming your wardrobe to one that values your clothes and how they are made.

We’re a proud social enterprise and today is – a moment to raise awareness and celebrate the amazing work carried out by these businesses around the world. Ethical Rebel is a passion project raising awareness of issues in the fashion industry and showing how garment workers and the environment are mistreated. We have published three zines so far, with another on the way, and we donate copies of these to student libraries in the UK.

There are lots of great reasons to shop secondhand clothing. There’s so much potential for finding high quality garments at a very reasonable price.

But did you know that, according to the ‘Fixing Fashion’
report, extending the life of a garment by an extra nine months could lead to a 20-30% reduction in carbon emissions, waste and water usage? Each year, the production of textiles accounts for over 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

The amount of clothing we buy has doubled over the last 20 years. According to the ‘A New Textiles Economy’ report by the Ellen Macarthur Foundation, it is estimated that more than half of the fast fashion garments produced worldwide are disposed of in less than a year from purchase. 97% are thrown away and end up in landfill.

Another benefit of shopping secondhand clothing rather than new, is that it’s unlikely many people will be wearing what you are. You can blend items from different eras to create your own unique style. It allows you to express your personality through your clothes, rather than simply following trends that perhaps don’t suit you or represent you.

Our High Streets are bursting with charity shops and vintage clothing outlets. And you’ll find they have a higher footfall now than most other High Street shops. But, before you buy, don’t forget that the most sustainable pieces of clothing are already in your wardrobe. Ask yourself: Do I need it? Will it bring value to my life? And is it designed to last years and years? If the answer is no, the most powerful thing you can do, is leave it in the shop.

Every year, millions of tons of plastic enter our oceans, threatening ecosystems and wildlife. There are a number of projects helping to protect or clean plastic from our oceans through beach cleans, education, activism, raising awareness or exciting tech. We've chosen 5 of our favourite sustainable t-shirts from these projects. Slave to Fashion by Safia Minney is an incredibly important book about the fashion industry. It investigated slavery in the fashion industry at a time when people were only just starting to take notice. Sadly, the situation for many workers in the garment industry has not changed much.

The book contains interviews and micro-documentaries with garment workers caught up in slavery. These men, women and children make the clothes sold on our high streets.

The book also showcases the best practices of brands and designers making changes within the fashion industry. They prove that slave-free fashion is achievable and fashion can be used to empower workers. All whilst creating beautiful, competitive and accessible fashion.

An inspiration to designers, conscious consumers, business people and policy makers alike. Slave To Fashion presents the facts, stories and actions we must take to eradicate modern slavery.

We have 2 preloved copies of this wonderful book in our bookshop, both signed by Safia Minney.
