Some days are long some nights are late, finding the perfect words and passages to celebrate a life can be time consuming but it’s always worth it when the words hit just right and bring everyone to a place of sweet reverie and joy filled memory.

Why not celebrate the life of the person by decorating with something other than flowers, choosing something that was meaningful to the person in their life. Sports team colours, herbs, dungeons and dragons, etc. There are no hard and fast rules about how you celebrate and remember your persons life, so be creative if it honours their legacy.

It’s easy to forget. It’s easy to believe we will live forever. It’s easy to think we have a tomorrow. A daily contemplation of our limited time in which we have to enjoy life, enjoy people, enjoy our pleasures, enjoy our achievements, enjoy love, enjoy our creation and to enjoy all that we welcome into our lives, gives you a laser focus on what we really want to be doing with our most limited resource. Our time. Yes we all have things that have to be done, but just start each morning over the next week reminding yourself that one day it will all end as you know it, and see what different choices you make. How you prioritise. What is truly important to you. ❤️

It’s important to not only celebrate the life of the person we have lost, but to also celebrate life for us all, and embrace it. There is no time in our lives when we give ourselves permission to be ourself more so than at the end of our lives. Nothing is so serious at that point. Through his poem ‘Tiara’ Mark Doty takes us on a journey of wonderful self expression without concern for anything but just being who we are. Aren’t we all asking for it?

My thanks to Robert and Micheal for introducing me to this great poem, it certainly seemed to bring peoples memories of Robert alive, a perfect summation of a beautiful life. ❤️

In March of this year it was my honour to support a family with the service of their son who lost his life at just 27. They felt that his wish would have been to be buried on the family farm in a natural burial and for the grave site to be a wild meadow flower garden as their son loved the fields and flowers of the farm. I went back to see the family, and their son, yesterday on his 28th birthday and shared some deep and profound time at the graveside with his Mother Phillipa, Father Dave, siblings Joanne, Micheal and Jessica, as well as cousins and friends. Happy Birthday Ben.

It’s important to maintain connection to those we lose and celebrating special days is to be encouraged not avoided, no matter how painful it is to begin with.

Mostly I conduct secular, spiritual or humanist ceremonies, but from time to time, in order to capture the essence of the person, I get to research religion and faith. I love the learning, the growth and being able to make a service that truly honours the person for all they were. 🙏🏼

If you have goals, make sure they are the right ones, all too often we invest time and effort into the wrong things only to realise at the end of the race it was the wrong outcomes we were chasing. Regret is the biggest challenge I deal with in end of life clients.
