Youth Mental Health Day

At Connected Lives, we think Youth Mental Health Day is a brilliant opportunity to celebrate young people and highlight what helps them feel confident, supported and able to thrive.

Young people face pressures from school, exams, friendships, social media and worries about the future. Through our Connected Teens course, we help parents and carers understand teenage behaviour, stay connected through difficult moments and provide the basecamp young people need as they grow.

Building a positive future starts with connection - one conversation, one relationship and one step at a time.

Our next Connected Teens course starts 7 October. Find out how you can help your teenager thrive: www.connectedlives.org.uk/connected-teens

Want to help your teenager approach revision positively and get the best from their studies?

If you have a Year 11 or Year 13 student heading into an important exam year, now is a great time to get ahead of the pressure and learn how to support them without nagging, conflict or added stress. And if you have a Year 10 or Year 12, you can be super ahead of the game!

Join us on Wednesday 15 October at 8pm on Zoom for Creating Constructive Conversations About School with experienced teacher, parenting coach and author Katharine Radice.

Katharine will share practical ways parents can encourage positive revision habits, motivation and confidence, while keeping conversations about school constructive and your relationship strong.

15 October | 8pm | Online via Zoom

A summer challenge: follow their lead

This summer, why not try giving your child 15 minutes where they are completely in charge?
They choose the game.
They choose the story.
They decide whether you build a tower, hunt for bugs, make a mud pie or have a teddy bear picnic.

Your job?
Be curious. Join in. Notice. Enjoy them.
These little moments tell children something really important:
“You matter to me. I want to know about your world. I enjoy being with you.”

So this summer, amongst the days out, sibling arguments and inevitable “I'm bored!” moments, look out for the little opportunities to connect. Because sometimes the best summer memories aren't the big adventures. They're the moments when we were simply together.

Summer connection: it doesn't have to cost a thing

Summer holidays can sometimes feel like a long list of things to organise, places to go and activities to find. But from an attachment perspective, some of the most valuable summer moments are often the simplest ones.
Try:
• Letting your child choose what to play for 10 minutes – and joining in.
• Going for a walk and following their curiosity: “I wonder where that ant is going?”
• Making a den out of blankets and cushions.
• Having a picnic on the floor.
• Looking at the clouds and making up stories about what you can see.
• Getting outside with a ball, a bucket of water or a handful of chalk.
• Sitting together with a book, even if it's one you've read 100 times.
• Letting them teach you how to play their favourite game.

You don't need to make every day memorable.

Connection doesn't need a plan. Sometimes, it just needs you.

As the summer holidays unfold, there are so many opportunities to simply delight in our children.

It doesn’t have to be a big day out or an expensive activity ...... A shared joke, joining in their game, noticing what makes them laugh...... This summer, perhaps we can slow down, follow their lead and take time to notice the joy in being together, creating powerful moments of connection

Because our children need to know not only that we love them, but that we genuinely enjoy them too.
