Jacks is one of the most favourite games of my childhood. It is so fast and it demands such incredible hand eye coordination. Did you know that it is one of the oldest and most widespread games in the world. When I was working in New Zealand Jacks was known as Knucklebones and they used the vertebrae from sheep instead of the little metal objects we use now. In desert countries they used to call it Five Stones and they used to throw the stones up in the air and try and catch them on the backs of their hands.
Because the core concept – to throw something in the air and grab some before it lands – is such fun, nearly every culture has developed a version of this game. In Japan it was known as O-Tedama, typically using six small silk bags filled with rice. In Vietnam it was known as Danh Dua, played with 10 wooden chopsticks and a single ball.
Here is the link to the Craze Card for the English Rules… you can buy these Jacks through lots of shops e.g. Amazon, toyshops etc.. Does this mean more people are playing it? I hope so! I certainly promote it in all the schools I go to.

How many of you remember Cat’s Cradle? I am now in my 7th decade, and it was very popular when I was a child. What’s interesting in this clip is the Indian teacher who totally recalled exactly how to do it just on her own without a second person using their fingers to take it off hers. When I was at school, we never reached that level of excellence, we always did it in pairs. If you have any memory of this one, please comment if you always did it with a friend or if you also graduated from the Cat’s Cradle University and did it on your own.

his Week's Craze is Long Rope Skipping. Every school needs a designated adult to keep skipping going. I have been advocating for this now for 40 years! The BBC filmed my work in a playground on a programme called Just One Chance in 1997. Even today I get the same responses from Lunchtime Supervisors as before: "Yes we would love to keep skipping going but the minute we start a child hurts themselves or an arguments starts and I have to drop it". Me: "We need to have something called Play Duty and Patrol Duty. It is so simple really. The person on Play Duty points to the Patrol Person in a high vis tabard and says 'go and see so and so' - it's such an easy workable solution!
Skipping along with Ring Games and Crazes need to be at the heart of a good playground.
The British Heart Foundation has released so much research on how skipping increases everyone's health. Older children find it really exciting as well and they love the more complicated skipping challenges. You will always find a long queue next to the skipping. Here is a simple version of one of the most well known of all Skipping Chants:
Teddy bear, teddy bear, turn around,
Teddy bear, teddy bear, touch the ground,
Teddy bear, teddy bear, go upstairs
Teddy bear, teddy bear, say any prayers.
In the last clip you can see a teacher attempting the actions - it is so good for the students to see how hard adults find things - they themselves can do it really easily!!

FREE Fun Kids Game Every Week for Homes and Schools!
For years now I have been promoting Traditional Games to play at lunchtime. They bring such fun and they really test the skills of all age children - and any brave lunchtime supervisors who want a go! Jazz up your playground and start a Craze of the Week. One of my best schools is Halling Primary School - I did some training with them, maybe about 6/7 years ago and they are still creating Crazes every week which are shown in assembly and sometimes posted on Facebook. I am going to start a new series where each week I give you FREE a Craze Card that shows you how to play the game. I happen to have a tiny bit of footage on this weeks game, French Skipping, just to help you visualise it! I will try and do one each week but if you can't wait then you can buy the whole set by emailing me [email protected]
Here is the link to the PDF you can print off - Enjoy!!

"Quite simply Jenny Mosley is a legend" … - what an amazingly lovely thing to see from a person that I am in awe of. Jean Gross CBE is a prolific writer and of course headed up the wonderful Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning bank of resources from the DfE for all schools in the UK. She kindly has written a foreword for all 4 101 Books. These are tried and tested games that are much loved by practitioners as they boost self esteem, help children regulate their behaviour, teach children social skills, encourage friendships and give them opportunities to find ways to practically get on with each other.
I am currently running lots of workshops on the Importance of Play, Fun and Joy in Schools - Both in the Classroom and Playground

"This is a brilliant book. It is positive, accessible and theoretically underpinned. As Jenny points out, schools are currently supporting an increasing number of children with complex needs.... This book continues to inspire and inform me, and I very much enjoyed reading it. It makes a significant contribution, and it is a must-read for all teachers and trainee teachers. Jenny’s commitment to inclusion and to never giving up on children really shines through in every chapter.... For me, this book is like gold dust."
Professor Jonathan Glazzard
Rosalind Hollis Professor of Education for Social Justice, University of Hull, UK
Those of you who remember my work will know that inclusion is central to everything the Golden Model is trying to achieve. Currently I run workshops on How To Support Inclusion Within Calm and Happy Classrooms.

I have got a new Secondary book out. It has had two editions before. However, in light of all the recent research on the impact of the digital world on the mental health of young people – I have had to completely start again with the book using new research and some new case studies. I feel very comforted that Professor Robin Banerjee (whose own work is absolutely wonderful at Sussex University) has written such positive words about it, "And now, Jenny Mosley’s deep insights into relational practices at school matter more than ever."
Yes I am still working in Secondary Schools to Promote Positive Relationships, Wellbeing and Mental Health. I do this through Demonstration Circle Times and Training Days.
