Stepping Stones District Specialist Centre

Stepping Stones District Specialist Centre Stepping Stones is an Opportunity Group for children with special needs living in West Wiltshire. Ages 0-5 with varying levels of need attend the group.

What is Stepping Stones? Why do we need funds? Stepping Stones is an Opportunity Group for children who have special needs. Children come to us from birth and leave us when they move on to school. We cover the West Wiltshire Area – Trowbridge, Melksham, Westbury, Warminster, Bradford on Avon and all the surrounding villages. All the children who come to the group have been referred to us by a Paed

iatrician, Health Visitor or other professional and have a wide range of different conditions such as Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, or Autism. Many children have a developmental delay, which means that they have had difficulties in learning skills such as walking and talking. Some children have very rare conditions, which mean they have very complex needs. Children who come to Stepping Stones are assessed by our highly trained team and are helped and encouraged to learn through play. They are also given the opportunity to meet health professionals such as the Speech and Language Therapist, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist and Music Therapist. These therapists work with our team to develop a plan, which is specific to each Childs individual needs. The Paediatricians also hold their clinics at Stepping Stones so families and children can be seen in familiar surroundings. Stepping Stones is only partly funded by Wiltshire County Council. Each year we have to raise £40,000 in order to continue to provide our service to the children. We pay for extra therapy sessions for the children and also fully fund both the Music therapy and Hydrotherapy sessions. We rely on the very generous support of the local community to help keep our group running.

Not our usual welcome back post - but it’s an important one!

Please be aware that West Ashton Road is closed, so families travelling from Westbury and Warminster (and that side of town!) will need to use an alternative route to reach us.

Castle Mead remains accessible and you can still travel along West Ashton Hill, but not past the roundabout. We understand that mornings don’t always go to plan, so we wanted to give you a little heads-up to help your journey run as smoothly as possible. The roadworks are estimated to complete on 11th September - they are carrying work on electric and gas connections.

Okay… who fancies a challenge?

We’re very excited to be a charity partner for the 2027 Longleat 10K, organised by 2:09 Events, and we’re looking for some lovely people to join Team Stepping Stones!

The race takes place at Longleat on Sunday 24 January 2027 and we have a limited number of charity places available.

Your place is completely free and we are asking each of our runners to raise a minimum of £100 for Stepping Stones.

You don’t need to be someone who casually runs 10Ks for a pastime! If you’re a regular runner, brilliant. If you’ve been thinking about giving running a go and need something to aim towards, also brilliant.

Most importantly, you’ll be doing it while raising money to help us continue supporting the children and families who come through our doors.

Places will be offered on a first come, first served basis, and registration closes on 30th November.

Fancy joining us?

🏏 Tomorrow’s the day!

One of our favourite summer events is back tomorrow, with The Kings Arms and The Crown going head to head once again at Trowbridge Cricket Club.

We’ll be there with our fundraising stall and our brand new game, and we’re really looking forward to seeing lots of familiar faces.

If last year is anything to go by, it will be such a lovely afternoon for the whole community, whether you’re there for the cricket, the sunshine, the food… or just the excuse for a drink at the clubhouse bar. 😂

📍 Trowbridge Cricket Club
📅 Sunday 23rd August
⏰ From 3pm

Come and say hello if you’re there!

Stepping Stones is now closed for the summer holidays.

📅 We will reopen on Tuesday 1st September, with children’s sessions beginning on Wednesday 2nd September.

As one chapter ends, another begins… 💙

As our Bluebirds spread their wings and head off to school, we look forward to welcoming new children and families into the Stepping Stones family this September. For some, that means moving up from another room, and for others, it will be the start of a brand new adventure with us.

Over the last few days our team has swapped story time and messy play for training, planning, sorting and preparing for another busy year. Safe to say… we’re all ready for a well-earned rest!

If you need support while we’re closed, you’ll find helpful signposting information on our website.

To all of our families and our fantastic community, thank you for another wonderful year. We hope you have a fantastic summer and we’ll see you in September.

We had a wonderful visit from the new Mayor of Westbury, Councillor Carole King, who popped by to say hello and see what we've been up to.

As we showed Mayor King around, we discovered she was already familiar with Stepping Stones from when we were based at Polebarn Road. It was lovely to share how we've grown while continuing to support children and families across West Wiltshire.

Mayor King then spent some time with our Bluebirds, who were enjoying a super fun last day at Stepping Stones before starting school in September. She joined us in the garden where we were playing with rainbow balls, they were everywhere, and at times we were all dodging them!

Even through play, there are always opportunities to learn. One of the children proudly told Mayor King they had a red ball while giggling away, a lovely reminder of how learning happens naturally during everyday moments.

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit us, Mayor King. We hope you'll come back and see us again soon!

Learning never stops at Stepping Stones!

Today our practitioners spent the day with the Community Children’s Nursing Team refreshing our clinical skills in epilepsy management, oxygen therapy and enteral (tube) feeding.

Working alongside children with a wide range of additional needs means it’s so important that we continue to build our knowledge and confidence. Days like today help ensure we’re providing safe, specialist support for every child who comes through our doors.

A huge thank you to the Community Children’s Nursing Team for sharing their time, expertise and support with us.

Well... our Sensory Scramble is over, and it's safe to say we all remembered why it's one of our favourite weeks of the year!

It was a week full of exploring, creating, getting messy, and having lots of fun together. A huge thank you to our incredible team, who once again threw themselves into planning activities that were carefully tailored to the children in each session.

Most importantly, thank you to our amazing families, friends, and supporters. Thanks to your generosity, the children have raised an incredible £1,200!

Every penny will be poured straight back into our playrooms and outdoor spaces, helping us create even more opportunities for the children to play, explore, and discover.

Thank you for making this year's Sensory Scramble such a wonderful success!
