Last of my summer Forest School sessions until September with my adults yesterday. Nature bingo woodland walk, fire lighting skills, s'mores and happa zome. My first ever experience of a participant making a catchy musical beat and song while he used the hammer. What a joyous bunch they are. 🌿

We had a Very Hungry Caterpillar session yesterday! 🐛

After the story children and grown ups took turns blindfolding each other and and seeing if they could guess which fruit from the story they were tasting! 🍎🍐🫐🍓 🍊

The children did a wonderful job of collecting sticks for our fire. We toasted giant marshmallows for our scrumptious s'mores! We learnt some amazing butterfly facts around the fire.

After our snack we made some beautiful butterflies using happa zome - the Japanese technique of pounding leaves and flowers to release their natural pigments into the fabric. We all loved this activity, it blends together art, science, nature connection, observation and creativity. It was also a really mindful activity even with the physical fun of using hammers! 🦋

This has been the last of these summer sessions, what a gorgeous bunch of children and grown ups. I'm really grateful for the woodland summer fun we've shared.

We used our collected woodland treasures from the Gruffalo walk to make some absolutely beautiful nature pictures. Blown away with the creativity - well done children and grown ups! 🌿

As I was setting up, a little mouse was busy too, scurrying around preparing for it's day like I was. I managed to take a picture of it. Can you spot it? I showed it to the children and they thought it was the mouse from 'The Gruffalo.'

I agreed with them but I think really the mouse from the story is probably living in Hollywood(s) by now, surely? 😊

After reading 'The Gruffalo' we carried our baskets and looked all around as we 'took a stroll through the deep dark woods...'

Along the way we were thrilled to discover some very familiar characters living exactly where we thought we'd find them in the woods - high up in a tree or underground or in a logpile house. They each had a note to help us fill our baskets with woodland treasure...

We even found the Gruffalo' himself! This was a very exciting morning! 🐾

(Can you believe 'The Gruffalo' was published 27 years ago!?)

A mindful walk through the woods followed by sticky picture art with the treasures we collected on our way with my adults this week. And fire lighting of course! We enjoyed our caramelised apple slices under the shade of the trees. 🌿

After our campfire snack the children found a canvas suspended between the trees. As an excited group they used flowers, feathers, pine cones and sticks to paint a collaborative work of art.

Even more than a foundation for writing and learning about cause and effect, this activity was such a fun way for them to express themselves and their creativity, as well as their thoughts, feelings and discoveries about the world around them. The view of the woods through the shower curtain was a great way to inspire nature themed painting. I think we may have to do this again! 🌿

Yesterday we took our mindful dice for a wander through the woods to connect with and experience the vibrant wildlife here at its peak on these summer days.

Every child took a turn to roll it at walking intervals, then we followed the suggestion on the dice. We spotted butterflies, spiders, woodlice, birds and dragonflies. We stopped and stood still with our eyes closed to really listen. We found treasures on the woodland floor that made wonderful sounds and that would make a friend smile. We hugged trees. We climbed a fallen tree and ran with joy. 🌿
