It’s been a while since I introduced myself to my new followers so I thought I would share a little bit about myself again. I have been teaching for over 20 years and am also a qualified SENCO. After completing a Masters degree in Child Development and Learning, I have gained a wide range of experience working with neurodiverse young people. With personal experience of the impact of dyslexia and other neuro divergence within my family, I wanted to provide more specialist support for children with a specific literacy difficulty (SpLD) so went on to obtain my specialist teaching and assessing qualifications. I am a qualified level 7 assessor with a current APC and am a member of the British Dyslexia Association and PATOSS. I complete diagnostic assessments for dyslexia for students aged 8-16, assessing a learner's needs and developing personalised recommendations for both school and home. This morning I have been thinking a lot about a quote which a student and their parent shared with me this week which I think perfectly captures what it means to be a learner with dyslexia.

“Fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” – Bruce Lee.

For many of my students, mastery doesn’t come from seeing something once or twice — it comes from overlearning: revisiting a concept again and again until it becomes automatic, I often use games to help with this, maintaining motivation and keeping learning fun!

Overlearning isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of deep learning.
It’s about building strong, lasting neural pathways — the kind that allow skills like reading, spelling, and writing to become second nature.

Individuals with dyslexia develop resilience, determination, and mastery through practice and persistence. Overlearning builds skills and confidence - one 'kick' at a time.

This week is Dyslexia awareness week and the British Dyslexia Association together with Jamie Oliver have launched the UK’s first voice petition to campaign for early screening and increased teacher training and resourcing for dyslexia.

The BDA, Jamie Oliver and a group of well-known voices have launched the UK’s first-ever voice petition. Live now on Spotify! Instead of signing your name, you record a message. Because not everyone communicates the same way. The goal is clear: screen children early. Support teachers properly. Give every child a fair shot.

This campaign puts pressure on the Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson.
