Students from the Skills for Life Vocational group enjoyed a hands-on encounter with history this week as Helen Wallbridge, representing Hampshire Community Heritage, paid a special visit to their art class.
Helen brought with her a selection of Roman artefacts discovered in the New Forest, offering learners a rare opportunity to explore genuine objects from Britain’s ancient past. The session also showcased examples of Roman mosaics found in the local area, helping students connect their creative work with the region’s heritage.
Learners were able to handle the artefacts, ask questions, and gain insight into the lives of the people who once inhabited the area. Inspired by the visit, students then created their own paper mosaics, applying traditional patterns and techniques they had learned during the session.
Staff said the workshop not only enriched students’ artistic skills but also helped their understanding of local history.

Students Gain First-hand Experience at Southampton City Mission
A group of Vocation Gateway Students taking part in a recent work experience placement at Southampton City Mission gained a close look at the charity’s clothing distribution operation while developing key workplace skills. During the placement, students worked in the charity’s warehouse, sorting donated clothing by size and type, labelling crates and organising items for distribution. Tasks such as folding garments demonstrated the precision and consistency required behind the scenes.
Each student also took on a Team Leader role, offering a realistic introduction to workplace responsibility and communication. The placement emphasised punctuality, safety clothing—such as sturdy footwear—and maintaining low noise levels around office staff. One surprising insight for the students was learning that the charity parks its delivery van inside the warehouse overnight as a security measure.
Many said the experience boosted their confidence, with several able to imagine themselves working in a similar environment in the future. All agreed the placement was enjoyable and worthwhile, and they would recommend work experience to others.
