Our next school holiday activity:
Junk Puppet Workshop 26th August
Come and create something quirky!
Last year we had such fun making crazy puppet creations out of junk with master puppeteer .richardson_puppets that we simply had to invite him back again for another workshop this year!
You'll have to use your own creative genius and problem solving skills to glue, screw, tie, nail and sew random bits of junk together to make quirky characters - go wild with your imagination!
Places are limited to 12 people, and it's for ages 12 - 18

Come and create something quirky!

James is a master puppeteer and professional storyteller, who is brilliant and getting young people's creativity flowing...

We'll help you to find your own creative genius, imagination and problem solving skills to glue, screw, tie, nail and sew random bits of junk together to make quirky characters that seem full of life....

This workshop is perfect for budding young artists, animators, storytellers, sculptors, puppet crafters and anyone who likes to let their imagination go wild!

Places are limited to 12 people, and it's for ages 12 - 18

Spot the children!.
We had great fun building camouflaged dens with Trayeyouthwork last week - they were split into three teams of four, and sent off to build camouflage dens in secret locations. They were given an hour to build. Then we met up again and each group was split into two hiders and two seekers. The two hiders were sent back to their dens to hide and the two seekers were sent off to see how quickly they could find the other dens….. it took awhile because they were so well-made…. Eventually we thought we’d found them all, but one of the dens seemed to have been abandoned by their hiders….. so I stood there by what I thought was the abandoned den and I’m saying to everybody “ok, That’s it. We found them all now, game over…… “ and then I hear a voice coming from the bush beside me….” you haven’t found me yet!” And Fergus pops out of the bush…. Turns out the den that we had thought we had found was a decoy and the real one was right beside it and Fergus had stayed hidden there quite as a mouse undetected the whole time! I was blown away…. that was next level camouflaging! 🙌🙌🙌 The National Lottery Community Fund

🛶🔥 ONE NIGHT. ONE BIG CANOE. ONE EPIC ADVENTURE. 🌿⛺
Last week, our New Futures Academy crew headed off on an overnight canoeing and camping adventure on the River Dart — it was soooo much fun!

We spent the day paddling together in a huge canoe, playing games, exploring the river and generally having a brilliant time out on the water. 🛶🌊

The trip also involved:
🏕️ Learning how to build our own ‘basha’ shelters using sticks and tarpaulins
🔥 Cooking, chilling and hanging out around the campfire
🌿 Visiting a local rewilding project and learning about nature restoration
🧭 Exploring and learning practical outdoor skills
🌳 Taking some quiet solo time in nature to slow down, reflect and simply be
😂 And, of course, plenty of laughter, games and time to connect with each other.

One of the things we love about adventures like this is that there’s so much more going on than simply learning outdoor skills. Young people get opportunities to work together, try things for themselves, overcome challenges, spend time away from screens and experience what it feels like to be part of a team.

A huge thank you to Canoe Adventures for helping make the trip such a success — and especially to their skipper Gabriele Warwick, who brought an amazing combination of energy, humour and encouragement to the adventure. He made sure everyone was involved, everyone had fun and the whole group had a fantastic experience. 🙌

This is what we’re about at New Futures Academy: creating memorable outdoor experiences where young people can learn, explore, connect and grow — without it ever feeling like a lesson.
And judging by the smiles around the campfire, this one was a definite winner. ❤️🌿

New Futures Academy CIC runs outdoor learning, crafts, nature connection and adventure activities for young people aged 13–18 near Totnes. We run a fortnightly 'youth mentoring group' and also school holiday activities.

Exploring the healing power of nature… 🌏🌿two days of ecotherapy workshops with students of clinical psychology from the University of Plymouth . Massive thanks to elpithabruce my fabulous co-facilitator, to the wonderful students for all their contributions, and to Lisa and Marc from The Deer Wood Diaries which was just a superb venue for such activities 🙏💚🔥🤩
