WildWise run fabulous outdoor events for all ages in Devon: day courses and camps: bushcraft, canoeing, nature awareness, wildlife and storytelling plus training courses for outdoor professionals. WildWise courses and camps are based on our specialist skills and knowledge of bushcraft, survival skills, wildlife, nature awareness, woodcraft, personal development, and storytelling. We work

with our own experienced and professional team together with a national network of specialists to provide courses and events of the highest quality - from kids camps and family holidays to bushcraft and environmental education training. The challenging and creative opportunities we offer can expand individual and corporate understanding of the value and meaning of our relationship to the natural world. Our events are held in inspiring and beautiful Devon locations that are teeming with wildlife. We also travel nationwide, by arrangement. If you enjoy watching Ray Mears on TV and would love to have your own outdoor experience in bushcraft and survival skills or to encounter our native wildlife then our bushcraft courses or camps on Dartmoor, on the beautiful river Dart, and on the spectacular South Devon coastline, could be just the thing you've been looking for!

Often, when we talk about ‘nature connection’ or Deep Ecology, we miss out the human species. And yet here we are, in an animal body, born of evolution just like the oak, the lizard or the chimpanzee. For generations we have distanced ourselves from our own ‘deep ecology’. Today there are exciting new developments – in fields as diverse as dance, science, health, leadership and contemporary ritual – that can help us ‘re-member’ our selves. Waking up our embodied awareness also gives us and our participants access to deeper connection, somatic intelligence, health and creativity. Toning these muscles of sensate awareness takes practice and is different for each individual, so this introductory workshop offers simple tools, exercises and inquiry questions to tailor to your own work setting.

‘The shortest distance between one human being and another….is a story’

Rabbi Shem Tov

OVERVIEW
A foundation in telling traditional stories.

Narrative skills are an increasingly valued part of an educators toolkit, applied to great effect in all sorts of settings and with a diverse range of client-groups. The craft of storytelling can be broken down into some fundamentals which once distinguished can assist the rapid improvement for those wishing to make use of it either as professional storytellers, or to blend in with presentation skills they already have.

Finding the right story at the right time is also a key area that the course will consider as well offering some coaching for individual work. Participants will then emerge from this enlivening and empowering process with tales to tell, and more confidence and understanding of how, why and where to tell stories.

For adventurous teens aged 13-16 years, offering a unique opportunity to learn or hone essential survival skills, connect with nature, and make lifelong friends.

Why choose Forest Outlaws?

There are plenty of studies evidencing the well being benefits of nature connection e.g. increased resilience, more regulated emotion and the ability to relax, reduced depression, anxiety, and stress however according to new research from the RSPB and the University of Essex as children get older and move into teenage years their connectedness with nature drops away and in particular mid teenagers feel less connected to nature than any other group.

WildWise aims to instill a love of nature from an early age and to sustain and nurture that interest over the years by offering fun and challenging programmes that support that connection into adulthood and beyond. Our Forest Rangers camp is our ever popular nature immersion camp on Dartmoor for 8-12 year olds. This new Forest Outlaws programme aims to continue that journey offering activities, skills and challenges and a depth of experience geared towards older children.

Wild Time programmes offer girls and young women an opportunity to ‘grow’ alongside experienced and qualified outdoorswomen to learn bushcraft skills, build confidence, develop a sense of self and have fun outdoors.

✨Why is this important now?✨

Young people’s mental health and wellbeing has never been so important – we hear much about the crisis of mental health among teenagers and recent UK statistics (young minds UK) show just how big the problem. This is mirrored globally. The challenges and worries of Gen Z in some ways (e.g. social media, climate change, covid) may be unique but these sit alongside the typical developmental challenges which come with this stage of life.

✨What will we be doing?✨

For this camp we will bring a group of girls together to learn new skills and face challenges in the wild; to explore the land by day and night, adventure across moor, woods and rivers to learn more about who they are and what they want from their lives on the threshold of young adulthood.

The adventure includes inner and outdoor challenges, bushcraft, wilderness survival skills, group games, wild walks, environmental art and crafts, and culminates in a final quest! We will cook on open fires, sleep under the stars, share stories as well as just hang out together in the peace and beauty of the wilderness.

✨How will the camp be?✨

This is a relatively small programme – typically for between 8-12 girls. This encourages the group to gel and helps the participants to feel supported and develop a sense of community.

✨Where will we be?✨

Our private venue is a wild riverside meadow on Dartmoor near to Newbridge. The facilities are basic; shelter and toilet tents are temporarily erected for the duration of the camp. Full details and directions will be made available after booking.
