Have you ever created a timeline of your life?
A life timeline can be a helpful therapeutic tool when exploring experiences that may not have been fully processed.
It isn’t about forcing yourself to remember everything or repeatedly reliving painful events. It’s about gently placing the different parts of your story alongside one another.
You might include:
🌿 significant relationships
🌿 changes, losses and transitions
🌿 times you felt safe—or unsafe
🌿 experiences of being seen, misunderstood or excluded
🌿 moments of joy, connection and belonging
🌿 periods that feel unclear or difficult to remember
🌿 the ways you adapted and survived
When we see our experiences in context, patterns can begin to emerge. We may understand why certain situations affect us so strongly, recognise survival strategies we still use today and identify parts of our story that may need care.
It can also help us recognise something trauma often obscures: our strength.
A timeline should be approached gently. Gaps do not prove that something traumatic happened, and you don’t need to uncover every memory for healing to take place.
If creating one leaves you feeling overwhelmed, stop and return your attention to the present. This can be especially helpful to explore alongside a suitably trained therapist.
Your story is yours. You are allowed to approach it slowly, with curiosity, compassion and choice. 💚
