First Aid updates - Primary Survey and Catastrophic Bleeding.
Catastrophic bleeding is severe and if not controlled can be fatal in a few minutes. This is why the Primary Survey has changed to:
D - Danger - check for danger to yourself, anyone around and the casualty and do not enter if it is dangerous
R - Response - check response levels of your casualty and call emergency services if there is no or poor response. If someone else can get an AED, send them to get it
C - Catastrophic Bleeding - life threatening bleeding should be treated at this point with a haemostatic dressing or tourniquet
A- Airway - open the casualties airway (head tilt, chin lift for adults/children and neutral position, chin lift for infants. Use jaw thrust if you suspect a neck/back injury)
B - Breathing - check breathing by looking, listening and feeling for up to 10 seconds. If they are not breathing or just gasping start CPR (30:2 for adults and 5:15:2:15:2 for children/infants)
C - Circulation - check for non life threatening bleeding and any signs of shock and treat, as needed. Look at skin colour (lips, gums) and feel for temperature. Check for signs of cardiac issues.
D - Disability - look for other neurological issues such as low sugar, stroke, hypothermia, heat stroke or head injury. Are they alert? responding to voice? responding to pressure or unresponsive?
E - Exposure - check for other injuries (under clothing, if needed) or medi alerts/information if you do no know the casualty. Prevent heat loss or shield from direct sun

Martyn's Law (Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025). While settings that can reasonably expect below 200 individuals to be present do not fall within scope of the act, all settings should have 'preparedness plans' for the safety of their children, volunteers and staff. Do you have a Security Lead? An Incident Lead? Have you completed a Self Assessment? Are you aware of 'HOT'? Run, Hide, Tell? 4 C's?
Read the guidance here:
Protective security and preparedness for education settings
How education settings should prepare for and respond to terrorism and other major incidents.

Expected changes for the EYFS 2026:
Babies and children must be placed down to sleep safely. For children under 2 years old, providers must ensure that:
• Children are placed down on their back in their own separate sleep space on a firm flat surface such as a cot, bed or mattress on the floor. Babies aged 1 year and under must only be placed to sleep in a cot.
• Sleep spaces should only contain a firm, flat, waterproof mattress and lightweight bedding which is firmly tucked in around the child below their shoulders to prevent head covering. Alternatively, a well fitted baby sleep bag may be used. Check the manufacturer recommendations before using a baby sleep bag.
• Where blankets are used, the child is placed feet-to-foot at the bottom of the cot, with blankets tucked in.
• Cots must not contain extra items such as toys, pillows, extra blankets, bumpers, wedges or straps.
• Children should not get too hot or cold. The recommended room temperature for babies is 16 – 20˚C.
• Children’s heads are not covered. • Children under six months of age must always have an adult with them in the same room for every sleep. All children must be frequently checked when sleeping. • Children are always within sight and hearing of staff when sleeping.
Providers must ensure that all staff read NHS advice on Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) – NHS. More information on safer sleep guidance is available from The Lullaby Trust.

The Resuscitation Guidelines are reviewed every 5 years and at the end of 2025 we saw some changes published and introduced to the UK Resuscitation Guidelines. We have now updated our on-line system and our lesson plans. If you have completed your training with us in the last 3 years your on-line account is still active and you can see any changes on there. Any training that you have completed is still fit for purpose and you do not need to retrain (until your current certificate expires). However, we are going to be delivering some refresher sessions for those of you who have requested this.
We are going to be discussing some of the changes here, over the next few weeks.
1. Changes to Paediatric CPR
The new guidance states that 5 rescue breaths should be given followed by 15 compressions and then 2 breaths. The first aider should then continue with 15:2.
Infants are 0 to 1 year and the compression should be 1/3 depth. The hands should encircle the infants chest, with the thumbs at the front. When applying a defibrillator one pad should be on the back in the centre, between the shoulder blades and the second pad should be on the front of the chest to the left hand side of the sternum.
Children are 1 to 12 years and the compression should be 1/3 depth. When applying a defibrillator one pad should be on the back in the centre, between the shoulder blades and the second pad should be on the front of the chest to the left hand side of the sternum.
Adolescents are 13 to 18 years and the compression should be 5-6cm depth. When applying a defibrillator one pad should be on the upper right of the chest and the other under the armpit on the left hand side.
The pads that are already distributed will not have the correct diagrams on for infants and children. If you can remember to put the front one on to the left of the sternum, great! However, do not worry if you place it in the centre - the important thing is to take prompt action.

We understand that recent infant formula recalls may be causing worry for parents and carers. Our information page explains which products are affected and what you should do.
Batches from brands including Aptamil, Cow & Gate and SMA have been recalled. If you have formula at home, check the batch code as affected products may still be in your cupboard.
If you have an affected batch:
- Stop using it
- Return it to the store for a replacement
- You can switch to another batch or brand
- If formula was prescribed, speak to a pharmacist or doctor first
