As children grow, the burn risks around them change.

Children aged 0-1 may be at risk from hot drinks being carried over them and bath water

Children aged 1-4 are naturally curious and may reach, pull or climb towards hazards, including hot drinks, appliances and dangling cords

As children aged 5-10 become more independent, new risks can appear around kitchens, hair and beauty tools, radiators, heaters and outdoor spaces.

For children aged 12-18, increased independence can bring additional risks around cooking, heated appliances, candles and fireworks.

โ˜€๏ธ Seasonal activities can also introduce different burn risks throughout the year, from BBQs, fire pits and sun exposure in summer to fireworks, hot water bottles and heaters during colder months.

This August, we are supporting families and practitioners with practical burn prevention advice that reflects real life and every stage of childhood.

Prevention is possible when advice feels clear, realistic and easy to act on.

๐Ÿ’š Behind every burn statistic is a child and a family whose lives change in an instant.

Yesterday we shared that hot drinks are one of the leading causes of burns in babies and young children.

Today, we're sharing Charlie's story.
Charlie was just 15 months old when he pulled a pan of boiling water over himself. In this extract from the Mini First Aid Family Health Podcast, his mum, Michelle, shares the events of that day and the lasting impact it had on their family.

The reality is that many childhood burns are preventable. By raising awareness and learning simple first aid, together we can help prevent more families from experiencing the same trauma.

Please take a moment to watch and share this powerful story ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ”ฅ

If help us support Childrens Burns Trust and the incredible work they do by helping us raise awareness or by donating to our August fundraiser ๐Ÿฅฐ

Hot drinks are the leading cause of burns to children in the UK.

Serious hot drink burns to children are up 16.4% since 2022.

These are not minor injuries. Every child in this statistic needed specialist hospital treatment for life-changing burns.

This August, we're supporting Children's Burns Trust in highlighting the impact of burns and how so many of these injuries are preventable.

Check back everyday throughout August to learn more about how to prevent and treat burns in babies & children ๐Ÿ’š

The colour of your child's swimwear could save their life - if your child ends up in difficulty, every second counts.

Choose bright, high-visibility colours like neon yellow, orange, pink, or green. These colours stand out against the water, making it much easier to spot your child if they go under or wander off.

Avoid blue, grey, or white swimwear. These colours can blend into the water, making it far more difficult to see a child when time is critical.

It might seem like a small detail, but it could make all the difference in an emergency.

๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ’› Choose colours that can be seen, not colours that disappear.
