As children grow, the burn risks around them change.
Children aged 0-1 may be at risk from hot drinks being carried over them and bath water
Children aged 1-4 are naturally curious and may reach, pull or climb towards hazards, including hot drinks, appliances and dangling cords
As children aged 5-10 become more independent, new risks can appear around kitchens, hair and beauty tools, radiators, heaters and outdoor spaces.
For children aged 12-18, increased independence can bring additional risks around cooking, heated appliances, candles and fireworks.
โ๏ธ Seasonal activities can also introduce different burn risks throughout the year, from BBQs, fire pits and sun exposure in summer to fireworks, hot water bottles and heaters during colder months.
This August, we are supporting families and practitioners with practical burn prevention advice that reflects real life and every stage of childhood.
Prevention is possible when advice feels clear, realistic and easy to act on.

The colour of your child's swimwear could save their life - if your child ends up in difficulty, every second counts.
Choose bright, high-visibility colours like neon yellow, orange, pink, or green. These colours stand out against the water, making it much easier to spot your child if they go under or wander off.
Avoid blue, grey, or white swimwear. These colours can blend into the water, making it far more difficult to see a child when time is critical.
It might seem like a small detail, but it could make all the difference in an emergency.
๐งก๐๐ฉท๐ Choose colours that can be seen, not colours that disappear.
