Preparing your child for secondary school:
Put yourself in your child's shoes - remember what it was like for you before starting secondary school. Be open and empathetic as this will allow your child to feel like they can tell you anything.
Look out for changes in emotions and behaviour - subtle changes in emotions and behaviour can be a sign of stress and anxiety, so it will be worth having a chat with them about how they are feeling.
Help your child build problem-solving skills - allow them to build their initiative and independence by solving their own problems so they can build trust in their own ability to problem solve.
Set aside time to talk about the move - create an informal space where you can speak to them about the move.
Help your child to recognise their qualities - ask them to list what they like about themselves and recognise them as qualities.
Talk to them about the exciting things they will experience.
Do a practice run of the journey to school - this will help them to feel familiar and confident.
Prepare the equipment that they will need.
